Facing fascism : New Yorkers remember the Spanish Civil War : a video history project by
James D Fernández(
Visual
)
in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Twenty-two New Yorkers from all walks of life, between the ages of 75 and 95, recall life in the city in the late 1930s, and reminisce about how their lives - and the life of their city - were transformed by the rise of fascism and the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in July, 1936. Five of the interviewees volunteered to fight in the Spanish Civil War as members of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade; the rest were ordinary New Yorkers who have vivid memories of the city's extraordinary mobilization in the late 1930s. In-depth interviews have been edited into 25 brief thematic video capsules, ranging in length from 30 seconds to 7 minutes. This format is intended to make the DVD appropriate for use in classroom discussions. These testimonies are meant to complement the exhibition "Facing Fascism: New York and the Spanish Civil War" organized by the Museum of the City of New York (MCNY). The DVD can also serve as a complementary resource to the exhibition catalog of the same name, published by NYU Press and MCNY
