Deborah Sampson was born at Plympton, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, in 1760, the daughter of Jonathan Sampson (b. 1729) and Deborah Bradford Sampson, and a descendant of Abraham Sampson (d. 1690) and William Bradford (1588-1657). She enlisted in April, 1781, under the name "Robert Shurteff", for service as a private soldier in the Revolutionary War. She was wounded at Tarrytown. She served until November 1783. She married Benjamin Gannett (1753-1837), son of Banjamin Gannett (b. 1728) and Mary Copeland Gannett, at Sharon Massachusetts, in 1784. They had a son and two daughters. She died in 1827

John Upton was born in Scotland and he was one of the Scottish prisoners taken by Cromwell. He was in Salem village (later Danvers), Massachusetts about 1652 and married Eleanor Stuart. He died in 1699 in Reading, Massachusetts. Descendants and relatives lived in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, Colorado, New York, Iowa, Maine, Ohio, Illinois, California, Virginia, Tennessee, Louisiana, Michigan and elsewhere

This volume is a reprinting of an edition originally published in 1797 and describes the life and war service of Deborah Sampson (variously spelled Samson in other accounts). She is one of only a handful of women known to have served with the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. Sampson disguised herself as a man and enlisted under her deceased brother's name, Robert Shurtlieff. Sampson was also a friend of Paul Revere, who assisted her in successfully petitioning for a military pension later in her life
