Charles James Fox by John W Derry( Book )

10 editions published in 1972 in English and held by 826 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Charles James Fox PC (24 January 1749 ? 13 September 1806), styled The Honourable from 1762, was a prominent British Whig statesman whose parliamentary career spanned thirty-eight years of the late 18th and early 19th centuries and who was particularly noted for being the arch-rival of William Pitt the Younger. His father was a leading Whig and Fox rose to prominence in the House of Commons as a forceful and eloquent speaker with a notorious and colourful private life, though his opinions were rather conservative and conventional. However, with the coming of the American War of Independence and the influence of the Whig Edmund Burke, Fox's opinions evolved into some of the most radical ever to be aired in the Parliament of his era."--Wikipedia

"Robert Stewart, 2nd Marquess of Londonderry, KG, GCH, PC, PC (Ire) (18 June 1769 ? 12 August 1822), usually known as Lord Castlereagh[n 1] (pron.: /k?slre/ KAR-sul-RAY), was an Irish and British statesman. As British Foreign Secretary, from 1812 he was central to the management of the coalition that defeated Napoleon and was the principal British diplomat at the Congress of Vienna. Castlereagh was also leader of the British House of Commons in the Liverpool government from 1812 until his death by suicide in August 1822. Early in his career, as Chief Secretary for Ireland, he was involved in putting down the Irish Rebellion of 1798 and was instrumental in securing the passage of the controversial Irish Act of Union of 1800."--Wikipedia
Politics in the age of Fox, Pitt, and Liverpool by John W Derry( Book )

22 editions published between 1990 and 2001 in English and held by 567 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"For many people the late eighteenth century was a period of political corruption, with the political world waiting for the triumph of reform. In this study, now in a revised edition, John Derry shows that the traditional political system was more remarkable for its resilience than for its defects, and that it succeeded to an astonishing extent in meeting the challenges of war, the threat from the French Revolution, and the problems caused by unprecedented social and economic change. A narrative is combined with analysis of the assumptions on which the practice of politics was based and the fashion in which politicians responded to the demands made of them." "Due weight is given to the element of continuity. The king continued to play a significant role in politics, and no ministry could survive without the confidence of the crown and the support of the country gentlemen, and Pitt and Liverpool owed their success to their ability to appeal to these two powerful political forces. The importance of the French Revolution is not underplayed, but war is seen as of greater significance than ideology in bringing about a polarisation of opinion and the dominance of a conservation which rested squarely upon traditional values. But transformation was also part of the story, and this study is fascinating in the manner in which it demonstrates the subtle blend of the old and the new which gave politics their unique flavour. The personalities of George III, Fox, Pitt and Liverpool are brought to life in a style which will entertain as well as inform."--Jacket

He left office in 1801, but was Prime Minister again from 1804 until his death in 1806. He was also the Chancellor of the Exchequer throughout his premiership. He is known as "the Younger" to distinguish him from his father, William Pitt the Elder, who previously served as Prime Minister of Great Britain. Charles, Earl Grey : aristocratic reformer by John W Derry( Book )

7 editions published between 1991 and 1992 in English and Undetermined and held by 245 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This is a fresh study of Charles, Earl Grey. It provides a more critical account of Grey than previous books, stressing the traditionalism of his outlook, and his retention of an aristocratic set of values throughout his long political career."--BOOK JACKET. "Earl Grey is famous as the author of the Great Reform Bill, the achievement which crowned his premiership. The author shows how this followed years of political frustration and disappointment, and that the Reform Bill can only be understood when it is placed in its historical and political context. John Derry describes the reaction in England to the French Revolution, the Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars and the Irish crisis, and their effect on Grey as a politician. He also focuses on such important influences in Grey's life as his commitment to civil and religious liberties, his devotion to Fox, his disdain for Pitt and detestation of Canning, and his loyalty to Grenville."--BOOK JACKET. "This penetrating and lucid biography of one of the most influential parliamentary reformers of the nineteenth century reveals the impact of personality on the political events of the period. It also sheds much fascinating light on the nature and practice of politics between the end of the War of American Independence and the accession of Queen Victoria."--BOOK JACKET
