Hopper by Edward Hopper( Book )

5 editions published in 2012 in English and French and held by 306 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This volume presents a definitive Hopper monograph. Published for a massive retrospective at the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid, and the Grand Palais in Paris, it approaches Hopper's relatively small oeuvre in two sections. The first covers the artist's formative years from approximately 1900 to 1924, examining a selection of sketches, paintings, drawings, illustrations, prints and watercolors, which are considered alongside works by painters that influenced Hopper, such as Winslow Homer, Robert Henri, John Sloan, Edgar Degas and Walter Sickert. The second section considers the years from 1925 onwards, addressing his mature output through chronological but thematic groupings."--Jacket flap
The painting of modern life : 1960s to now by Turin. Castello di Rivoli Museo d'Arte Contemporanea( Book )

3 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 294 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book re-examines what has been arguably the most influential development in the history of contemporary painting - the use and translation of photographic imagery. Beginning with seminal photo-inspired works from the early 1960s by painters such as Gerhard Richter, Vija Celmins, Andy Warhol and Malcolm Morley, this book charts the international evolution of this trend over the past 45 years. Richly illustrated with over 100 paintings by 22 artists whose work draws upon varied photographic sources - from amateur snapshots to news and magazine pictures - this book explores how the significance and content of an image changes dramatically when it is translated into a different medium."--Jacket

Architect for better days by Jean Prouvé( Book )

1 edition published in 2017 in English and held by 95 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book, which accompanies a major retrospective at the LUMA Foundation in Arles, focuses on twelve prefabricated houses designed by Prouvé, each of which has been specially rebuilt for the exhibition. Originally trained as a metal worker, Jean Prouvé regarded himself as an engineer and constructor rather than a designer or architect. Among his broad output, which ranges from lighting to furniture, exhibition structures to shelving, his modular buildings are particularly intriguing. Essays setting his work in context are accompanied by archival and contemporary images, drawings, and handwritten notes, together with a portfolio of images of the twelve houses as installed in Arles. Jean Prouvé was a French metal worker, self-taught architect, and designer, now regarded as one of the most influential designers of the early modernist movement. Among his achievements, he is revered for using technology previously limited to industrial manufacturing within his elegant architecture

Hopper : Madrid, Museo Thyssen--Bornemisza, June 12-September 16, 2012 ; Paris, Grand Palais, October 10, 2012-January 28, 2013 by Edward Hopper( Book )

2 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 51 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Edward Hopper is as quintessentially American as Jackson Pollock or Andy Warhol. Like them, his imagery has reached far beyond the realm of art to impact on our culture in the broadest terms, so that we see early twentieth-century America through is work, as much as within it. THe paired Charles Burchfield attributed Hopper's success to his "bold individualism," declaring the "in him we have regained that sturdy American independence which Thomas Eakins gave us." Hopper's art was profoundly of its time, both in its expression of the subtle melancholies of modern life and in its deeply cinematic qualities--perhaps Hopper's greatest gift was his treatment of light--to which directors from Alfred Hitchcock to Wim Wenders have paid homage. This volume presents a definitive Hopper monograph. Published for a massive retrospective at the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid, and the Grand Palais in Paris, it approaches Hopper's relatively small oeuvre in two sections. The first covers the artist's formative years from approximately 1900 to 1924, examining a section of sketches, paintings, drawings, illustrations, prints and water colors, which are considered alongside works by painters that influenced Hopper, such as Winslow Homer, Robert Henri, John Sloan, Edgar Degas and Walter Sickert. The second section considers the years from 1925 onwards, addressing his mature output through chronological but thematic groupings. Comprehensive in its scope, with a wealth of color reproductions, Hopper is the last word on the artist."--Page 2 of cover
Art without capitalism by François Hers( Book )

2 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 44 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Keeping capitalism out of the game while works and their contexts are reinvented: this book is about the possibility of a new chapter in the history of art, in which the "public" allows itself to become a patron of the arts, and people from all walks of life begin to speak the raison d'être of art works. Artists are faced with undreamed of situations in which the mediators of contemporary art play an avant-garde role. Responsibility for the common good is shared between citizens and their elected representatives, while a "gift economy" (public grants and private donations) provides the means to engage freely in a new adventure: the advent of an "art of democracy."

Jean Prouvé : architecte des jours meilleurs( Book )

2 editions published in 2017 in French and held by 26 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
