Selected letters of I.A. Richards, CH by I. A Richards( Book )

10 editions published between 1960 and 1990 in English and held by 262 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Ivor Richards had a far-reaching effect on critical appreciation, and methods of teaching literature. This selection concentrates on his thought, and on his influence on writers and thinkers, rather than his biography, though the letters reveal also his many friendships. The first letter included here dates from the winter of 1911, to his mother; by the early '20s the first of many letters to T.S. Eliot appears; and there are others to Masefield, Empson, Charles Ogden, with whom he founded Basic English, and the painter Wyndham Lewis. The selection covers the whole of his adult life, ending in the year of his death

Principles of literary criticism by I. A Richards( Book )

6 editions published in 2001 in English and held by 89 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Why one opinion upon literature or life is not as good as another, why some experiences are worth while and others not, why poetry and art are important, are the chief questions discussed in this book. Such topics are often treated without sufficient attention to the distorting influence of language. The author's Poetics has been based upon a study of the emotional use of words, and through this approach a clear answer to many perplexing problems is forthcoming. A whole generation of critics, teachers and students of literature has found this book of extraordinary value

In this 1922 scholarly landmark, influential British critic I.A. Richards and his colleagues Charles Ogden and James Wood lay out a new theory of harmony and balance in a work of literature the two mingle with an audience's psychological impulses in order to determine how the work is perceived. The philosophy of rhetoric by Ivor Armstrong Richards( Book )

3 editions published in 2001 in English and held by 53 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Our communication is limitedby misunderstanding. Rhetoric, as Professor Richards defines it, is the study of misunderstanding and its remedies. The conventional rules of the old rhetoric and the formulations of scientific language have narrow application to conversational speech; Professor Richard's definition of rhetoric is based on a practical question: how do words work in discourse? To answer this question, he examines the interaction of words with each other and with their contexts, showing how a continual synthesis of meaning, or "principle of metaphor", gives life to discussion. It is through comprehension of the way meaning changes in discourse that we can better control and animate our use of words, and so decrease misunderstanding. -- Product Description

The meaning of meaning : a study of the influence of language upon thought and the science of symbolism by Charles K Ogden( Book )

2 editions published in 2001 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Language is the most important of all the instruments of civilization." The authors state this premise boldly in their preface to "The Meaning of Meaning," a classic work whose significance--and challenge--to the study of language, literature, and philosophy has remained undiminished since its original publication. Much about language continues to be only hazily understood, distorted by our habitual attitude--often one of indifference--toward words, or by lingering assumptions based on discredited theories. What IS the relationship between words and what the words refer to? Between words and the way we think? Can understanding such matters lead to greater precision in communication? Readers considering these questions find themselves at the crossroads of linguistics and communications theory, of literary criticism and philosophy -- an interdisciplinary nexus claimed by the increasingly influential field of semiotics--and "The Meaning of Meaning" will prove, as it has over the last six decades, an essential resource
