[Letter] 1816 Oct. 28, Camp Crawford, [Decatur County, Georgia to] the Governor of the State of Georgia, Milledgeville by Duncan Lamont Clinch( )

1 edition published in 1816 in English and held by 0 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This is a letter from Colonel D.L. Clinch at Camp Crawford (Decatur County, Georgia) to an unnamed Governor of Georgia (probably David B. Mitchell, 1809-1813, 1815-1817), dated October 28, 1816. Clinch informs the governor of the death of a Mr. Lewis, a citizen of Georgia, who was allegedly murdered by an Indian of the Mikasuki (Miccosukee) area, inhabited by both Lower Creeks and Seminoles. This information came to Colonel Clinch from Captain (William?) McIntosh near Fort Gaines where the murder took place. Clinch reports that the Lower Creek chiefs have ordered the killer apprehended and put to death and warns that such an event should not color the state's favorable opinion of "friendly" Indians
