Miners' lung : a history of dust disease in British coal mining by Arthur McIvor( )

18 editions published between 2007 and 2016 in English and held by 827 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Arthur McIvor and Ronald Johnston explore the experience of coal miners' lung diseases and the attempts at voluntary and legal control of dusty conditions in British mining from the late nineteenth century to the present. The book addresses the important issues of occupational health and safety within the mining industry; issues that have been severely neglected in studies of health and safety in general
Organised capital : employers' associations and industrial relations in northern England, 1880-1939 by Arthur McIvor( Book )

16 editions published between 1996 and 2011 in English and held by 252 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This detailed 1996 study contributes to an expanding field of interest: the social history of industrial employers. Using previously untapped primary sources, Organised Capital explores the emergence of employers' organisations in northern England and analyses their policies during the heyday of collective activity. Arthur McIvor evaluates the impact of trade unionism, state intervention, war, economic recession and changing product markets on these organisations, charting their role and patterns of growth. He challenges notions of a monolithic employer group and crude economic determinism, while also rejecting 'revisionist' accounts of weak and ineffective employers. Instead, he reaches a more balanced appraisal of these institutions' role in capital-labour relations and the pursuit of employers' class interests. This book will be of interest both to historians and to students of industrial relations

Santé et travail à la mine, XIXe-XXIe siècle by Judith Rainhorn( )

1 edition published in 2016 in French and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A history of work in Britain, 1880-1950 by Arthur McIvor( Book )

1 edition published in 2001 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"A History of Work in Britain, 1880-1950 analyses the rich mosaic of experience in the British workplace and discusses the continuities and changes between the mid-Victorian period and 1950. McIvor engages with the main arguments and theories that have dominated this contentious area, critically examining the veracity of Marxist conceptualisations of deskilling, degradation and the subordination of labour. Other themes taken up are the changing shape of the labour force, the role of the unions, interactions between work and health, the changing role of the state in the workplace and gender relations at work."--Jacket

'Bottom dog men': Disability, Social Welfare and Advocacy in the Scottish Coalfields in the Interwar Years, 1918-1939( )

1 edition published in 2017 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Abstract : This article connects with and builds on recent research on workmen's compensation and disability focussing on the Scottish coalfields between the wars. It draws upon a range of primary sources including coal company accident books, court cases and trade union records to analyse efforts to define and redefine disability, examining the language deployed and the agency of workers and their advocates. It is argued here that the workmen's compensation system associated disability with restricted functionality relating to work tasks and work environments. Disability became more visible and more closely monitored and this was a notably contested and adversarial terrain in Scotland in the Depression, where employers, workers and their collective organisations increasingly deployed medical expertise to support their cases regarding working and disabled bodies. In Scotland, the miners' trade unions emerged as key advocates for the disabled
