Materials in the Helene Stratman-Thomas collection were primarily created during Stratman-Thomas' time at UW-Madison, part of which was spent collecting folk songs throughout Wisconsin in 1940-1941 and 1948. The collection is arramnged into 3 series: Series 1: Personal papers (1847-1973), Series 2: Professional papers (1930-1970), and Series 3: Wisconsin folk music recording project. Series 1: Personal papers (1847-1973) are further subdivied into 5 subseries: Stratman-Thomas family papers, geneaology research, correspondence, memorabilia, and school papers. These subseries document activities of Helene's family and include newspaper clippings, correspondence, notebooks, concert programs, a few manuscripts of musical compositions by Helene, photographs, and school notebooks. Series 2: Professional papers (1930-1970) are divided into 4 subseries: administrative, classroom teaching, research and performance preparation, and other activities. These subseries include correspondence with other UW-Madison faculty, music pedagogy materials Stratman-Thomas used for her course preparation and teaching, materials related to her directorship of the University Women's Chorus, management of the Pro Arte Quartet, and her appearances as a soprano soloist. Series 3: Wisconsin folk music recording project, consists of materials related to Stratman-Thomas' Wisconsin and Cornish folk music collecting, and subsequent research, writings, lectures, books and radio broadcasts. The materials are arranged in 6 subseries: correspondence, general folk music materials, supporting materials, field recordings and related materials, end products, and Cornish materials. The series contains index cards, notes, transcriptions, correspondence, and research materials relating to her collecting trips. The original discs of her field recordings reside at Library of Congress; her original photographs reside at the Wisconsin Historical Society
