Gender and human rights in Islam and international law : equal before Allah, unequal before man? by Shaheen Sardar Ali( Book )

17 editions published between 1999 and 2002 in English and Undetermined and held by 317 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This study offers a conceptual analysis of gender and human rights under Islamic law, state law and international law, and extends this analysis to a specific examination of the nature of women's rights in the Islamic tradition. It explores the disparity between the theoretical perspective on women's rights and its application to Muslim jurisdictions, determined by elements of cultural practices, socio-economic realities and political expediencies, and uses the example of Pakistan to demonstrate the divergence between the theory and practice of Islamic law in these jurisdictions. It discusses the concept of an emerging 'operative' Islamic law, which includes principles of Islamic law, secular codes of law and popular custom and usage." "The book is based on extensive and in-depth research and provides a wealth of information across a number of fields including human rights, Islamic law, gender and the law, international law and constitutional law. It will be of prime interest to academics, lawyers, researchers, activists and policy makers involved in human rights issues, gender studies and Islamic law."--Jacket

A structured representation for noun phrases and anaphora by Syed S Ali( Book )

2 editions published in 1993 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Abstract: "I present a computationally-based representation for indefinite noun phrases and anaphora that models their use in natural language. To this end, three goals for knowledge representation for natural language processing: natural form, conceptual completeness, and structure sharing are described. In addressing these goals, an augmentation to the representation of variables (corresponding to indefinite noun phrases or anaphora) so that variables are not atomic terms is suggested. This leads to an extended, more 'natural' representation. It is shown how this representation resolves some representational difficulties with sentences with nonlinear quantifier scoping, in particular, donkey sentences."
Natural language processing using a propositional semantic network with structured variables by Syed S Ali( Book )

2 editions published in 1993 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Second, the formalism allows the specification of description subsumption as a partial ordering on related concepts (variable nodes in a semantic network) that relates more general concepts to more specific instances of that concept, as is done in language. Finally, this structured variable representation simplifies the resolution of some representational difficulties with certain classes of natural language sentences, namely, donkey sentences and sentences involving branching quantifiers. The implementation of this formalism is called ANALOG (A NAtural Logic) and its utility for natural language processing tasks is illustrated."

Protecting the world's children : impact of the Convention on the Rights of the Child in diverse legal systems by UNICEF( Book )

2 editions published between 2007 and 2008 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The book provides examples of ways in which the CRC has been successfully incorporated into diverse legal systems and derives from that experience a framework for improved alignment of national legislation with human rights instruments and with the CRC in particular, taking into account not only the provisions of the CRC but also its underlying principles, such as indivisibility of rights and the importance of partnership in realizing children's rights. As such it provides practitioners with a tool for supporting the legal aspects of implementation of the CRC as a foundation for implementation overall."--Jacket
