The NHS plan : a plan for investment : a plan for reform by Great Britain( Book )

6 editions published in 2000 in English and held by 136 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This is a Plan for investment in the NHS with sustained increases in funding. This is a Plan for reform with far reachlng changes across the NHS. The purpose and vision of this NHS Plan is to give the people of Britain a health service fit for the 21 st century: a health service designed around the patient. In part the NHS is failing to deliver because over the years it has been underfunded. But there have been other underlying problems as well. The NHS is a 1940s system operating in a 21st century world. It has: a lack of national standards; old-fashioned demarcations between staff and barriers between services; a lack of clear incenuves and levers to improve performance; over-centralisation and disempowered patients. These systematic problems, which date from 1948 when the NHS was formed, are tackled by this Plan. The March 2000 Budget settlement means that the NHS will grow by one half in cash terms and by one third in real terms in just five years. But investment has to be accompanied by reform. The NHS has to be redesigned around the needs of the patient. There will be a new relationship between the Department of Health and the NHS to enshrine the trust that patients have in frontline staff. The principles of subsidiarity will apply. A new system of earned autonomy will devolve power from the centre to the local health service as modernisation takes hold
Saving lives : our healthier nation by Great Britain( Book )

7 editions published in 1999 in English and held by 132 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This White Paper sets out how we propose to save lives, promote healthier living and reduce inequality in health. We are putting forward the first comprehensive Government plan focused on the main killers: cancer, coronary heart disease and stroke, accidents, mental illness. We want to see a new balance in which people, communities and Government work together in partnership to improve health. People can improve their own health, through physical activity, better diet and quitting smoking. Individuals and their families need to be properly informed about risk to make decisions. We are introducing new Healthy Citizens programmes to help make decisions. The Government is addressing inequality with a range of initiatives on education, welfare-to-work, housing, neighbourhoods, transport and the environment which will help improve health. We will reorient the NHS to ensure that for the first time ever, health improvement will be integrated into the local delivery of health care
