Peter the Great : a biography by Lindsey Hughes( Book )

19 editions published between 2002 and 2012 in English and Italian and held by 2,017 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This, the shorter biography of Peter the Great (1672-1725), tells his story from birth to death in twelve chapters, including two final chapters on the Tsar's legacy and posthumous reputation up to the present, with the aim of providing a vivid sense of the dynamics of his life and reign: The focus is firmly on the dramatic, appealing and unconventional figure of Peter himself: his actions, deliberations, decisions, relationships, tastes and possessions. It includes the more bizarre aspects of his character, such as his interest in dwarfs, the use of disguises, clowning and vandalism. The main sources are Peter's letters and papers, both published and unpublished, as well as other contemporary accounts and documents." "The narrative comprises both the public and private life, the life Peter lived as well as his significant fantasy world. Hughes offers fascinating new material on the 'alternative' or 'parallel' history of Peter's many disguises and pseudonyms, his deference to a number of mock superiors, and his relationships with individuals such as his second wife Catherine and his favourite Alexander Menshikov." "In each chapter Hughes explores Peter's image in painting and sculpture, bringing the story to the present day with a discussion of controversial monuments in Moscow and St. Petersburg."--Jacket
Russia in the age of Peter the Great by Lindsey Hughes( Book )

21 editions published between 1998 and 2000 in English and held by 1,561 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Hughes's thorough and scholarly account is certain to become the leading study of one of Russia's most fascinating and significant periods. Peter the Great, the charismatic Russian ruler who introduced a program of westernization at the turn on the 18th century, has long been a focus for historians, biographers, and politicians. Here Hughes (Russian History/University of London) has produced the first truly comprehensive English-language account of Peter's reign and both its immediate and long-term effects. Drawing on newly available archival sources and an exhaustive body of secondary literature, Hughes places Peter the Great's reign within its historical context, both national and international. Then, in a dozen extensively footnoted and delineated chapters, she undertakes a programmatic study of Peter and his reign, covering the Petrine military and governmental institutions, the economy, the arts, education, and religion. Each chapter is a masterful and balanced account that blends the critical and the narrative with a direct and entertaining style. Despite sometimes limited sources, Hughes also examines popular culture, including often neglected subjects such as the role of women, pretense and disguise, and life at the Petrine court (drinking, dwarves, dress, and the like). A final section includes several biographical chapters on Peter and his family that exhibit the author's ongoing attempt to address and correct common misconceptions, which particularly abound in debates about Peter's domineering personality. As throughout her study, Hughes remains fair and judicious, arguing repeatedly that the reality of Peter the Great is far more complex than the 'plain man image' often promoted. Above all, Hughes consistently argues for an interpretation that recognizes the blend of the pragmatic and the inspired that characterized Peter and his actions. A remarkable work of scholarship that will open for English-speakers the full scope of Petrine Russia. (28 illustrations)-

The Romanovs : ruling Russia, 1613-1917 by Lindsey Hughes( Book )

19 editions published between 2007 and 2015 in English and held by 928 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"For 300 years the history of Russia was inextricably linked to that of one family: the Romanovs. Tracing their line back to Tsar Michael and claiming a divine right to reign, they shaped the history of Russia, for better or for worse, over three centuries. Their influence defined the politics, society, art and philosophy of the time and led to the establishment of Russia as one of the great world powers." "When they gathered to celebrate their tercentenary in 1913, the Romanovs' grip on Russia had begun to loosen. Rasputin had prophesied their demise and his unpopular influence on the Tsar was growing. The strain of WWI had spread unrest throughout Russia. On July 17th, 1918, three hundred and four years of the Romanov dynasty ended when Tsar Nicholas II, his wife and five children were brutally murdered by a Bolshevik execution squad." "This work paints a vivid picture of the entire family and draws out their unique contribution to the creation of Russia. By bringing the characters of the Tsars and their family to life Lindsey Hughes has added much to our knowledge of this fascinating dynasty."--Jacket
Peter the Great and the West : new perspectives by Lindsey Hughes( Book )

14 editions published between 2000 and 2001 in English and held by 337 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book addresses particular aspects of the Grand Embassy and sets the Petrine reforms in their context, providing a basis for analysis of their impact on issues of modernization and westernization. The relationship between Peter and Britain is examined from both perspectives. Maritime history is considered in detail with emphasis on Peter's appropriation of development in Western science. The issue of Russia's orientation between East and West, evident even in changes in the style of portraiture, was crucial to military and diplomatic issues in Peter's reign --

Russia in the age of Ivan the Great, Ivan the Terrible and the first Romanovs may appear exotic and remote but it has not remained immune from the rediscovery and reclamation of the Russian past inspired by glasnost. Amongst the controversial issues in Muscovite history tackled in this volume, which brings together eleven scholars from the USA, the former USSR, the UK and Germany, are the debts owed by Western cartographers to early Russian mapmakers and the nature and origins of the Time of Troubles, long viewed by Marxist-Leninist historians as a 'peasant war'. Articles on Novgorod and Pskov offer fresh thoughts on alternative paths of political development, while studies of estate economy, landholding and military service in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries provide statistical analysis based on archival research, throwing light on the precarious status of Russia's 'middle service class'. The collection ends with the impression of a foreigner in Moscow on the eve of Peter the Great's reforms

A history of Russia : peoples, legends, events, forces by Catherine Evtuhov( Book )

1 edition published in 2004 in English and held by 7 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A History of Russia: Peoples, Legends, Events, Forces is a comprehensive narrative conceived and developed after the collapse of the former Soviet Union. Informed by the burgeoning historiography of the 1990s, the text balances political and economic explorations of everyday life, social roles, cultural dynamics, and gender issues. Many texts on this subject are written from a pre-Confederation point of view that may be unsuitable for today's classroom. This text provides strong coverage of 20th-century Russia and the U.S.S.R. without sacrificing its coverage of earlier historical periods
