The fairy tale is about two half-sisters, Bawang Merah and Bawang Puteh. After their father dies, Bawang Merah and her mother, Labu, have to share the house with domineering Kundor and Bawang Puteh. Bawang Merah has to endure more hardship when her mother dies. She is bullied, beaten and abused in every way imaginable by Kundor and Bawang Puteh. As the tale goes, her mother eventually reappears-as a fish. Bawang Merah becomes happier and this puzzles both Kundor and Bawang Puteh. Her ship comes in when a Prince hears her singing in the woods and marries her. Of course, Kundor is terribly unhappy that her brat, Bawang Puteh, is married to none, let alone a prince. So she devises an evil scheme to destroy Bawang Merah's marriage and get the prince to notice Bawang Puteh

Sri Banian marries Dewa Laksana and gives birth to a girl named Selendang Delima whom she left under the care of Tengku Bangsegara, but hidden in a trunk. Tengku Bangsegara then became the new Sultan of Benua Puri when he broke the royal sword of Gajah Putih. He marries the seven princesses of the late Sultan. The wives are curious as to the contents of the trunk. One day, they opened the trunk when Tengku Bangsegara was away. They found Selendang Delima, and started ill-treating her

However, Telani only has eyes for Alang Yahya, and their relationship blossomed when he rescued her from being drowned. Their growing closeness upsets Ali, and he schemes to break them apart. However his plan misfires, and instead Alang Yahya and Telani married with the blessings of the Sultan himself. When Alang Yahya had to sail away to Lingga leaving a pregnant Telani behind, Ali lies to the Sultan that misfortune will befall him and his kingdom if a sacrificial ritual is not performed. The Sultan believes him and orders that the sacrificial ritual be carried out, without knowing that it involves the use of blood from a woman in her first pregnancy on the sail boat 'Lancang Kuning' before its maiden voyage
