Découvrir les environs tout en marchant à l'aide d'un appareil mobile est désormais possible en associant les nouvelles technologies telles que la réalité augmentée (RA) et les services basés sur la localisation. De nombreuses applications mobiles ont été conçues à cet effet récemment. Les environs d'un utilisateur en mouvement sont présentés sur l'écran de son appareil mobile en utilisant les données de géo-localisation et elle peut interagir avec son environnement grâce à une couche d'information numérique superposée sur la scène capturée. Toutefois, la quantité d'informations géo-référencées produites et accessibles augmentant chaque jour, il y a un besoin croissant d'une approche générique qui vise à présenter l'information de manière structurée et adaptée aux différents domaines d'application et à la diversité des profils des utilisateurs.Notre travail se concentre sur la définition d'un modèle de données pour les objets 3D destiné à être intégré dans des applications de RA mobiles. Le modèle de données que nous proposons donne accès à l'information spatio-temporelle et thématique disponible sur les objets du monde réel. Alors que la réalité augmentée semble être bien adaptée pour la recherche d'informations à partir de la localisation, la plupart des approches basées sur la RA se concentre sur des scénarios spécifiques à un domaine d'application. D'autre part, le nuage des données ouvertes et liées (LOD Cloud en anglais) est un ensemble en constante extension de données structurées et publiées sur le Web. Il contient donc de grandes quantités d'informations à références spatio-temporelles qui peuvent être exploitées par les applications mobiles et présentées en utilisant la RA pour favoriser l'interaction. Dans notre recherche, ce nuage du Web des Données sert de source principale d'information au cours de l'expérience de découverte des environs à l'aide de la RA proposée à l'utilisateur.À cette fin, nous publions sur le Web les objets 3D correspondant aux objets du monde réel en utilisant notre modèle de données, ce qui permet de les lier avec le nuage du Web des Données. De fait, un objet du monde réel peut être représenté selon trois dimensions d'information : thématique (qui décrit les rôles ou fonctions de l'objet), spatiale (à travers sa géométrie 3D), et temporelle (par la période qui correspond à son existence). De plus, chaque changement dans la vie d'un objet du monde réel est représenté dans le modèle par des informations sémantiques. En conséquence, sur son appareil mobile, l'utilisateur visualise une vue de RA construite avec des modèles 3D légers et transparents. Il peut interagir avec ces objets de RA afin d'accéder aux informations relatives aux objets du monde réel correspondants qui se trouvent aux alentours et vers lesquels il pointe son téléphone mobile. Ces objets de RA permettent à l'utilisateur de construire mentalement la relation référentielle entre les objets virtuels et réels, tandis que le développeur de l'application mobile peut créer des expériences basées sur des thématiques différentes disponibles à travers sur le nuage du Web des Données (architecture, histoire, gastronomie, loisirs, etc.).En nous appuyant sur cette base de connaissances conceptualisée, nous proposons une architecture appelée ARCAMA-3D (Réalité Augmentée et 3D pour les applications mobiles sensibles au contexte), dont les modules permettent aux concepteurs et développeurs de créer leurs propres applications de RA pour différents domaines en étant en mesure d'étendre le modèle de données, de lier les modèles 3D avec d'autres ensembles de données ouvertes et liées disponibles dans le nuage, et d'alimenter ces applications de découverte à partir de sources de données spécifiques. Notre proposition est illustrée sur le cas d'étude que constitue le Monastère Royal de Brou, en France, à travers un scénario de cas d'utilisation pour un utilisateur visitant ce monument historique

Surface runoff is the source of severe hazards such as floods, erosion or mudflows. Railways can disturb natural surface water flow path, which can generate accelerated deterioration of the infrastructure, or the destruction of railway elements, such as the roadbed or the embankments. The IRIP method 'Indicator of Intense Pluvial Runoff' (French acronym) allows mapping surface runoff through three maps, generation, transfer and accumulation. The IRIP method aims to be simple and reliable, in order to be used on all types of lands, without calibration stage. As for others surface runoff models, the IRIP method evaluation faces the lack of data. However, evaluation is a crucial stage for the development of models. In the perspective of an operational use, or simply for the model development, it is essential to estimate the value and the reliability of the model outputs. The thesis objective is to provide an evaluation method using surface runoff impacts on railways. Difficulties lie in the fact that data to be compared differ in terms of form and content. Moreover, the infrastructure vulnerability must be characterized. The proposed evaluation method is based on the computation of contingency tables and of verification indicators, together with detailed analysis of specific impacts. After an estimation of the IRIP method performance, further developments can be tested and evaluated thanks to the proposed evaluation method. Finally, maps comprehensibility is enhanced, while preserving satisfying performance scores. By applying the IRIP method to operational contexts, it has been shown how the IRIP method can be used as a tool in expert appraisals. Different tasks of the risk management process have been studied such as risk analysis on railways, post-event investigation or the realisation of regulatory zonings. More generally, this thesis contributes to improve knowledge about surface runoff and provide methods for improving the risk management

To implement ecosystem services, key notion of environmental management, more and more actors have turned to quantification and mapping procedures. Because of its operational dimension that seems to be natural for many actors,ecosystem service mapping is often considered as an already operational and neutral tool. Yet, cartographical representation involves choices that are not neutral. Since mapping can raise doubts and technical limitations that often reflect in the notion itself, it can be seen as a way to critically analyze the notion. This thesis aims to study the mapping toolapplied to ecosystem services in order to understand their potential contribution to environmental management. To do so, it critically analyses the methodological dimension of the ecosystem service notion and its mapping. Furthermore, it aims topromote understanding of the relationships between human practices and the state of the natural environment, notably through the determination of factors of control that enable the quantification of ecosystem services. This thesis is based on the study case of deforestation areas in the Brazilian Amazon, where the landscape has been changing rapidly andrecently. Based on satellite images at high and moderate spatial resolution and on sampling data, statistical methods are implemented in order to map one or several indicators of ecosystem services. The results obtained allow the understanding of spatial repartition and the structure of these indicators, in connection with the way farmers use their land and the structural components of the territory. They also highlight the limitations and issues underlying the notion of ecosystem services and its implementation

This research was led in an industrial partnership with SNCF Réseau. In the field of geovisualization of spatio-temporal information, it focuses on developing cartographical visualization methods adapted to the analysis of the impacts of floods on the railway system.Historical events are of great help to understand and manage natural risks. Cartography became a key tool to analyze risks in their territorial contexts. But making maps which remain legible while showing all the complexity of risk processes that occurred during natural disaster is not easy. The main challenges are the need to represent both the temporal and the spatial dimensions of risk events, the need to visualize domino-effect, because they often lead to worsen damages, and the will to adapt representations to the cognitive capacities of users.This research resulted in four contributions. The first one is the formalization of flood narratives in a domain ontology, which describes flood events, domino-effects, their impacts on the railway system and also response measures to restore the system. Five case studies of historical floods were instantiated in the model. Resulting from their study, the second contribution consists in generic semiology principles to visualize the narratives of floods on maps. The third contribution is a geovisualization interface, which includes original graphical representations to visualize the temporal features associated with flood events. This geovisualization interface was tested in an experiment with expert users of the railway field. Results confirmed the proposals of representation of time but disconfirm proposals of visualization of domino effects. The analysis of results led to the fourth contribution, which consists in a reusable model of an experimental procedure that is adapted to test geovisualization interfaces

The increasing use of the transition terms in the public debate contributes to the emergence of new research methods whom geographers begin to apprehend. Transition invites to consider a new action framework. In the matter of energy domain, the transition concept involves geographers in their socio-spatial interpretations. This new spatiotemporal frame, where are introduced the notions of territorialisation of the energy and the reversibility, provides an opportunity to consider these issues from a reinterpretation of the space-time couple. In this context, the thesis aims in understanding and analyzing of socio-spatial mechanisms tested by the renewable energies development, especially wind turbines. The specificity of this approach may be a geographical rendition of the Life Cycle Assessment method. For this purpose, the thesis requires the concept of landscape in its dynamic meaning. However, the life cycle assessment invites us to reshape the idea of landscape dynamics according to the notion of event. The thesis explores the arrival of a wind turbines project as an event and it focus on its sudden emergence, the induced socio-spatial destabilizations and the individual and social adaptations. The purpose of this research is to investigate a Social Life Cycle Assessment of the landscape representations of the wind energy. This ambition faces a time constraint. The allowed time of a PhD thesis faces political times and the times of the experience. Created events or suffered events impact the socio-spatial representations differently and over various timescales. Considering a diachronic study brings about rethinking the epistemological and methodological issues raised by a corpus which gathers several types of data, from different sources and which would be analyzed together. The analysis is led on discourses and especially on spatial textual references along with the individual sensibilities revealed when a wind turbines project is initiated on territory. The thesis tracks the life cycle steps of windpower-events that we interpret according to the socio-spatial context of the study terrains
La ville endormie ? Le risque d'inondation à Lyon : approche géohistorique et systémique du risque de crue en milieu urbain et périurbain by Claire Combe( Book )

In the region of Lyons, the risk of flooding is the result of complex interactions between the city and its rivers, characterized by its spatial-temporal variability. This geohistorical and systemic analysis was done from archival sources and made it possible to understand the interactions between the urbanization, the hydrosystem and the risk. The approach, which is multiscale, is based on a historical GIS used as a tool for territorialization of dynamic components of risk. Started in a quite hydrological time more than 2000 years ago, the urbanization of the fluvial corridor was altered by the fluvial adaptation to the harder hydroclimatic conditions of the Little Ice Age (XIVth-XIXth century). This hydrogeomorphological crisis coincided with a crisis of overpopulation which caused the medieval sites to expand. It resulted in an increase in risk and generated a policy of defending the city against fluvial constraint. This set the base for today's flood management. During the XXth century, the absence of strong floods has contributed to a feeling of security within the city while in fact urban expansion has led to a latent increase in risk. This situation contrasts with the observable demands on the margins of the urban area. The recent studies of risk for Lyon have led to the understanding that the city is potentially exposed to floods. What this work brings to the classical risk equation is the fact that it takes into account the dynamic role of geomorphologic heritages and the history of flood management policies. It provides a key to understanding the complexity of the risk of flooding in an urban and periurban environment

Les interactions systémiques entre l'Homme et son milieu sont étudiées dans cette thèse au travers de la dynamique de la végétation des domaines pastoraux de la Chaîne des Puys (Massif central, France). A partir d'analyses de terrain (phytosociologiques, agronomiques) et d'enquêtes agropastorales nous établissons un état des lieux des estives des Dômes. Une démarche diachronique vise ensuite la recherche des causes de l'extension ligneuse et ses conséquences sur la couverture végétale. Notre démarche d'analyse est fondée sur un triptyque végétation - milieu - pratiques établit sur plusieurséchelles spatio-temporelles. Les résultats montrent que la déprise agricole, symptomatique des zones de moyenne montagne, et la fermeture ligneusedes espaces qui lui est associée ne caractérisent pas les trajectoires observées de la dynamique végétale. Ainsi, les nombreuses perturbations affectant le système (crises, pratiques) remet en cause la linéarité des successions observées dans la bibliographie, tant sur les vitesses de progression que sur les trajectoires et les caractéristiques. Il apparaît alors que le concept de mosaïque phyto-morphologique anthropique, proposé ici soit plus adapté à la réalité du terrain et à l'intensité de l'usage de l'espace. Les composants de cette mosaïque et leurs évolutions suivent des trajectoires stochastiques voire chaotiques dont la caractérisation première tend vers une disparition des landes au profit de la strate herbacée et non à une fermeture généralisée des milieux

La conception de cartes topographiques de référence est aujourd'hui caractérisée par une multiplication des données géographiques et des services de conception cartographiques de plus en plus distribués. Dans ce contexte, il est nécessaire d'enrichir les connaissances existantes sur la rédaction cartographique afin de préserver la qualité des cartes produites, i.e. qu'elles soient lisibles et efficaces. Nous faisons l'hypothèse que le style topographique facilite la lisibilité et l'efficacité d'une carte grâce à des codes et repères visuels connus des utilisateurs. Nous nous sommes fixés comme objectif de formaliser la notion de style topographique en tant que famille cartographique regroupant des signes graphiques reconnus des utilisateurs afin de pouvoir l'utiliser pour produire de nouvelles cartes topographiques.Dans ce travail de thèse, nous proposons un modèle conceptuel intégrant les concepts clés de signature visuelle et de famille cartographique. Nous validons et instancions ce modèle à travers la mise en place d'entretiens auprès d'experts cartographes et le déploiement de deux expérimentations auprès d'utilisateurs permettant d'étudier les familles cartographiques IGN et Swisstopo. Les résultats obtenus permettent de caractériser les signatures visuelles de chacune de ces deux familles cartographiques. À l'aide de la caractérisation des signatures visuelles de ces deux styles topographiques typiques (IGN-France et Swisstopo), nous proposons des recommandations qui permettraient de produire de nouvelles cartes topographiques pour les deux cas d'application suivants : (1) produire de nouvelles cartes topographiques appartenant au même style topographique, (2) produire de nouvelles cartes topographiques à la frontière entre deux pays / agences nationales de cartographie

The thesis is presented in three parts which include the three key words of the title and put intoperspective the function of territorial observation, with an approach to complexity mostly empiricaland constantly referring to systemics.The first part focuses on the polysemic notion of territory. Modeling the process of territorializationallows us to bypass the semantic difficulty that arises from multiple uses of the term in the literatureand in interviews conducted with experts. The territory is then revealed in different forms ofcombinations of tangible and intangible dimensions, and individual or collective representations.The second part is based on concrete achievements of observatories to develop and implement acomparative approach between thirty observatories according to their structure and functioning. Thissecond part of the work reveals sharp contrasts and lack of a consensual model which are the signs ofachievement and not an appropriate standard approach based on observation.Consideration sets of actors takes place during the third part which deals with governance for and byobservation. We raise questions about the structures and organizations which exist or should be set upso as to allow a better integration of observatories and an issue that is the decision support by theinstrumentation of geographic information

The isovist or vision field is an interesting topic with many applications in different fields: security, wireless networkdesign, landscape management and analysis, pedestrian access .... Taking in account 3D environment is a verychallenging task. Only a few solutions can detect 3D obstacles that limit the vision field. We present in this paper a newalgorithm that can detect all the objects which block the sight in a 3D environment including the ground surface. A demonstration with GIS data is also given.Building recognition is the first step for augmented reality and the geolocation of the camera. Research in this field usually does not use the content of the image to locate it. This paper presents a methodology for enhancing and complementing a GIS database of buildings with a texture descriptor of the facades by using information extracted from reference images. This descriptor is used to locate any other image by searching similar texture in the image and locate it through the 3D GIS data base. The absolute position and orientation of the camera of the new image can then be computed if camera parameters (i.e. focal length) are known. The quality of the results is presented and discussed

Opportunities in terms of digital modeling and representation of territories in 3D have risen with the technological developments in the fields of cartography, infographics, animation and CAD. Within this flourishing technological context. the lack of empirical studies ollowing to evaluate the upsides and downsides of the uses of 3D geoferencedmodels has often been highlighted. Hence an ethnographie study has been conducted by participating in the production processes of 3D geovisualisations and contributing to their uses by urban planners as weil as to the development of the''3D" professional field (through communications, formations, articles, etc.). Taking part in planning projects has been used as a way of experimenting. observing, documenting and analyzing the uses of 3D georeferenced models by their producers. presenters and audiences. Case studies in various contexts {urban development, windfarms development, flood mitigation planning. etc.) show that 3D geovisualisations have myriad and heterogeneous uses. Empirical data have been processed using sorne of the Grounded Theory Principles. Actor Network Theory and the notion of "intermediary object'' allow to analyze the uses of 3D geovisualisations in collective and/or collaborative contexts. Finally. theoretical tools and methods to apprehend 3D geovisualisations and their uses are described and new perspectives on how to anlayse spatial representations are opened up

When decentralization came to the Sahel in the 90s, and with the experienced gained after repeated droughts impacting their countries, information systems for planning development actions were implemented at various levels. But, according to the communities, these tools implemented at the local level for land planning, both for data collection and using the information system thus obtained, fell short of expectations and remain in the exclusive hands of decision-makers and technicians.Yet, when the expertise of the people is taken into account, including geographic information,data collecting is made easier and can help build tools tailored to the participation and negotiation between the various operators and program economic projects, which requires an approach based on the analysis and participative management of geographical management based on the expertise of these peoples.This thesis aims to be a support for local operators in the Sahel region when implementinglocal development plans and empower them by allowing a larger say in the decision making process. The aim is to contribute to a sound natural resources management by the development of management plans in the various areas, through a participative management of local geographical information and by mobilizing local expertise and knowhow.The question is how to define local development plans with the Sahel peoples, each with its own socio-economic specificity (pastoralists, agro-pastoralists, farmers, public figures, state officials ...) and to integrate their expertise, including their spatial expertise, in the developments of planning tools for economic development programmes.The results of the Southern Mali experience was an opportunity to take stock of the progress in the decentralization process, of the difficulties in having local peoples participate in decision making, of local development approaches and the vast expertise of the communities. These results offer prospects for the local development of specific communities in the Sahel, giving them planning tools based on a well-balanced participative management of local geographic expertise
