"Is it good to eat?" Anyone who has asked or been asked this question about some of our wild plants will find this book a fascinating source of answers. For it is not only accurate and complete, but is also rich in knowledge of the history of these plants and the ways in which they have been put to human use. The book covers all of the edible flowering plants and ferns, plus the important mushrooms, seaweeds and lichens growing wild east of the Great Plains and north of Peninsular Florida

The Cruciferae of continental North America : systematics of the mustard family from the Arctic to Panama by Reed C Rollins( Book )

6 editions published in 1993 in English and held by 245 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This monumental work culminates over fifty years of research and study by the world's leading authority on the important plant family Cruciferae. Worldwide, the mustards, which are morphologically diverse and economically valuable, comprise roughly 350 genera and perhaps 3,500 species. Included in the Cruciferae are vegetables (radish, cabbage, broccoli, turnip, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts), ornamental species (stock, sweet alyssum), familiar condiment sources, the bases for both edible and industrial oils, and of course the annual wildflowers and weeds that blanket so many landscapes in spring and summer."--BOOK JACKET. "This book evaluates the taxonomic criteria and the systematics of every species of the family known to occur in continental North America, including the weeds and cultivated introductions from Europe and Asia. Such coverage, much of it drawn from the author's own research, has not been attempted since 1838. The book describes 7 new species and 11 new varieties and reassigns 16 taxa to different genera or species. In all, the book treats 248 subspecies, varieties, and hybrids (243 of them native to North America and mostly endemic), 778 species (677 native and mostly endemic), and 99 genera (39 wholly endemic)."--BOOK JACKET. "Identification keys, description, and area of occurrence are given for all taxa. The 113 plates illustrate 346 species and varieties (some more than once), and include 341 line drawings, 60 photographs, 20 photomicrographs, and 77 scanning electron micrographs (the micrographs are mostly of pollen grains, seeds, chromosomes, and surface hairs)."--BOOK JACKET. "Introductory chapters offer general information on the Cruciferae, principal features of family members, taxonomic criteria, and methods of treatment. The work concludes with an appendix of new names, a list of literature cited, and an index."--BOOK JACKET

Gray Herbarium index; Harvard University by Harvard University( Book )

4 editions published in 1968 in English and held by 111 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A reproduction of a card index, prepared 1894-1903 by Josephine A. Clark at the U.S. Department of Agriculture Library and (since 1903) by the Gray Herbarium. The set reproduces about 265,000 cards published between 1894 and 1966. It is an indispensable tool for the taxonomy of NorthAmerican plants, covering all vascular plant taxa of the Western Hemisphere beginning with literature of 1886. For earlier names use the original volumes of Index kewensis. "Each card bears the scientific name of the plant, an abbreviation of the publishing author, a bibliographical reference to the place of publication and a brief statement of the geographic location of the taxon. New names and new combinations of names are indexed and the synonym involved is provided on each card" (Preface). Cross-references are provided, and when corrections are needed they are supplied on new cards
