Biological reference points for the conservation and management of steelhead, Oncorhynchus mykiss by N. Thomas Johnston( )

6 editions published in 2000 in English and held by 53 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This paper describes a method for defining two effective, simple, stock-specific biological reference points for steelhead (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and other territorial, stream-rearing salmonids whose stock/recruitment relationship approximates a Beverton-Holt model. The method assumes that there is an upper limit to smolt production that is determined by the amount & quality of freshwater spawning & rearing habitat, and that the maximum smolt recruitment is predictable in principle from habitat characteristics. The paper compares the performance of several biological reference points as thresholds in single- & dual-threshold harvest control rules, using an age-structured population model based on Keogh River (British Columbia) steelhead that incorporates realistic levels of process error & implementation error
Fish habitat assessment procedures by N. Thomas Johnston( Book )

8 editions published in 1996 in English and held by 22 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The purpose of this publication is to assist local groups in British Columbia to develop and implement integrated, effective, cost-efficient projects at the watershed scale to rehabilitate or restore fishery resources that have been adversely affected by past forestry practices. It provides a standard framework for identifying the needs and opportunities for fish habitat restoration through systematic resource assessments, and for prescribing and implementing effective activities to improve fishery and aquatic resources. It begins with background on forestry impacts on aquatic resources and on the fish habitat assessment procedure. The procedure is described at three levels: an overview assessment to provide a preliminary indication of factors that limit fish production in the watershed; a level 1 assessment to apply more precise diagnostics to identify habitat impairment, and to provide quantitative information needed initially to define and plan restoration projects; and a level 2 assessment to identify appropriate restoration options and priorities, and to provide detailed site information needed to prepare rehabilitation prescriptions
COMPARATIVE EVALUATION OF FENCE COUNT, MARK-RECAPTURE AND BENDIX SONAR ESTIMATES OF SALMON ESCAPEMENTS IN THE KEOGH RIVER, A VARIABLE-FLOW COASTAL B.C. STREAM by N. Thomas Johnston( Book )

8 editions published between 1985 and 1986 in English and held by 19 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The cost, reliability, accuracy, and precision of mark-recapture and Bendixside-scan sonar estimates of spawning escapements were compared againstfence counts between 26 July and 5 December 1985 for pink, coho, and chumsalmon in the Keoh River, a highly variable-flow B.C. coastal river. Allmark-recapture estimates of pink salmon escapements had good precision (CVabout 8%). Mark-recapture estimates for coho and chum salmon were lessaccurate and less precise because of the small numbers of tag recoveries.Tag recovery surveys could be made about 75 % of the time. Bendix side-scansonar estimates of total salmon escaptments greatly exceeded knownescapements

The Early growth of kokanee (Oncorhynchus nerka) fry in relation to ration by N. Thomas Johnston( Book )

2 editions published in 1988 in English and held by 7 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Growth rates of newly-emerged kokanee fry in their natural environment were determined by pen-rearing experiments, and their observed growth was compared to that of fish reared at known rations under the same temperature regimes in hatchery troughs. The work was done to assess the effects of altered limnological conditions in Kootenay Lake on the early growth of West Arm stock, which has undergone catastrophic declines in adult returns simultaneously with decreased inputs of phosphorus to the main lake

Effects of treated sewage effluent on periphyton and zoobenthos in the Cowichan River, British Columbia by Christopher John Perrin( Book )

4 editions published between 1986 and 1988 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The interconnection of the City of Duncan and Corporation of North Cowichan sewage treatment facilities through a common discharge to the mainstem Cowichan River in August 1980, raised the possibility of local degradation of an important salmonid spawning and rearing stream. The treated sewage effluent had high concentrations of phosphorus and nitrogen, and moderate biological oxygen demand. This study was undertaken to assess the effects of effluent discharge on the periphyton and zoobenthos, and to infer the possible effects on salmonids from any observed changes. Inorganic nutrient concentration, periphyton accrual and zoobenthos biomass were measured at one upstream and three downstream sites in the Cowichan River to determine effects of effluent discharge from the upgraded Duncan-North Cowichan sewage treatment plant. Samples were taken during summer months in 1979 and before and after discharge began in August 1980
