Challenging the cultural and social norms that condone, tolerate or excuse violence against women is an important strategy in the primary prevention of violence against women. While many factors are known to influence public perceptions, this paper focuses on the role of news and information media. This paper reviews the best available contemporary evidence on the way the media portrays violence against women, including how such news is gathered and produced, the nature of the content and discourse in news items, how risk is perceived and managed, and how audiences interpret these news items. The review includes a broad sample of literature including peer-reviewed scientific papers, reports, and guidelines for journalists. Overall, the findings show that the media frequently mirrors society's confusion and ambivalence about violence against women, but the media can play a role in dispelling myths and reinforcing information about the true nature and extent of the problem
