Behind the lines : Bugulma and other stories by Jaroslav Hašek( )

13 editions published between 2012 and 2016 in English and Czech and held by 1,515 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Jaroslav Hašek is a Czech writer most famous for his widely read if incomplete novel The Good Soldier Schweik, a series of absurdist vignettes about a recalcitrant WWI soldier. Hašek was remarkably prolific, and he wrote hundreds of short stories that all display both his extraordinary gift for satire and his profound distrust of authority. Here, in a new English translation, are a series of short stories based on Hašek's experiences as a Red Commissar in the Russian Civil War and his return to Czechoslovakia. First published in the Prague Tribune, these nine stories are considered to be some

Wir fünf und Jumbo : Roman by Karel Polaček( )

8 editions published between 2014 and 2017 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,272 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"A favorite work of Czech humor, We Were a Handful depicts the adventures of five boys from a small Czech town through the diary of Petr Bajza, the grocer's son. Written by Karel Polácek at the height of World War II before his deportation to Auschwitz in 1944, this book draws on the happier years of Polácek's own childhood as inspiration. As we look upon the world through Petr's eyes, we, too, marvel at the incomprehensible world of grownups; join in fights between gangs of neighborhood kids; and laugh at the charming language of boys, a major source of the book's humor. This translation at last offers English-language readers the opportunity to share in Petr's (and Polácek's) childhood and reminds us that joy and laughter are possible even in the darkest times"--

Death be not proud : the problem of the afterlife by Mark Corner( )

17 editions published between 2010 and 2011 in English and held by 638 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Might people one day live for ever? Would they want to? What sense can be made of ideas commonly referred to in terms of an ‘afterlife’? What about notions of Heaven and Hell, of Purgatory and reincarnation? And in what sort of state are human beings expected to be during this ‘afterlife’ – immortal souls or resurrected bodies (and does either notion make sense)? What about the fact that any ‘afterlife’ concerns not just the fate of individuals but of society (‘communion of saints’) and even the physical universe itself? This book tries to survey some of the existing arguments about life ‘after’ death, with chapters on material from Christian tradition (particularly the New Testament and the Early Church) and from the philosophy of religion. It then attempts to reach its own conclusions, drawing on Kant and Barth in order to suggest that death is to be overcome rather than survived
Saturnin by Zdeněk Jirotka( )

11 editions published between 2003 and 2017 in English and held by 543 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

14 editions published between 2010 and 2016 in English and held by 297 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The EU began as a Community of Six sharing sovereignty in the particular area of coal and steel, before growing into a Union of twenty-seven members. They quarrel and have their ̀red lines', but they share enough sovereignty to act effectively. This book shows that the same principle could be applied to a Global Union and claims that it would prove far more successful than existing international institutions, including the UN. --Book Jacket
