Ending the Cold War at home : from militarism to a more peaceful world order by Sam Marullo( Book )

5 editions published between 1993 and 1994 in English and held by 237 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

If the Cold War is really over, why is the United States still spending near record high amounts of money on defense? Now that we no longer fear war with another global superpower, why are we putting U.S. troops in harm's way all over the globe? After the President and Congress pledged to shift our focus from international to domestic issues, why aren't we converting more economic resources away from the military infrastructure to meet human needs at home? The answers to these questions, asserts Sam Marullo, lie in the institutional structures created over the last four decades and still in operation today. Despite the fall of the Berlin Wall and the rise of independent Soviet states, the United States' Cold War political, cultural, economic, and military infrastructure remain virtually unchanged. After unveiling the individual and organizational values which support the Cold War's defense industry, government agencies, media, language, and ideology, Marullo proposes reforms to end our domestic Cold War. His recommendations include increasing Congressional oversight and civilian involvement in foreign and military policy making, strengthening The Arms Control and Disarmament Agency, the U.S. Peace Institute, and other peace keeping institutions, declassifying government documents and weapons development, introducing peace education into the schools, and bolstering the authority of the World Court, the United Nations, and international law. Only by changing our attitudes and the ways our institutions operate, can we finally win the Cold War

"Community-Based Research and Higher Education is the long-awaited guide to how to incorporate a powerful and promising new form of scholarship into academic settings. The book presents a model of community-based research (CBR) that engages community members with students and faculty in the course of their academic work. Unlike traditional academic research, CBR is collaborative and change-oriented and finds its research questions in the needs of communities. This dynamic research model combines classroom learning with social action in ways that can ultimately empower community groups to address their own agendas and shape their own futures. At the same time it emphasizes the development of knowledge and skills that truly prepare students for active civic engagement."--Jacket
An Extension of the Behavioral Classification Project Upward to Adults by Sam Marullo( Book )

2 editions published between 1980 and 1981 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

For two decades the Behavioral Classification Project (bcp) has been developing instruments of a behavioral nature for the classification of emotional disorders and the classification of persons with specified patterns of emotional disorders. The bcp has four subprojects: the Pre-school Behavioral Classification Project (pbcp), the Children's Behavioral Classification Project (cbcp), the Adolescent bcp, and now the Adult Behavioral Classification Project (AdBCP). The AdBCP instrument closely parallels previous bcp instruments. It is based on the Adolescent bcp and is the result of a 19-member team devising behavioral items to include the full scope of adult mental and emotional disorders. The instrument was administered to clinical and nonclinical subjects. Seven of 24 factors are described; tables indicate distinct patterns for the different diagnostic groups. However, the comparisons have not been thoroughly analyzed, partly because standard scores necessary to make direct comparisons have not yet been developed. Comparisons can, however, be made from the raw score means and standard deviations across the rows for the factors. (Author/PN)

Gender Differences in Peace Movement Participation by Sam Marullo( Book )

1 edition published in 1989 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Women have been believed to be peacemakers throughout the centuries. Whether this is biologically determined or a socially structured has been a matter of controversy. This study examined gender differences and the social dynamics of peace movement participation. Subjects (n=272) were members of a local nuclear freeze campaign in 1984. Discriminant analysis and difference of means tests were applied to survey data to discern demographic, resource, attitudinal, and ideological characteristics that distinguished female and male participants. Very few differences were found and some were expected due to larger societal differences. However, subtle attitudinal differences revealed that women were less likely to believe in the utility of nuclear weapons and to minimize the strength of the United State's arsenal, demonstrating women's greater likelihood to take more risks than men. It is important to keep these differences in mind in terms of recruitment and education in order to avoid fostering a gender gap within peace movement organizations. To a great degree, differentiation within the movement has already occurred, and some of it can be seen as responding to these gender differences. The organizations most prone to gender differentiation should make special efforts to widen the conceptual framework of their members by explicitly making the other gender's perspective an integral part of their educational program.
