"Over the last decade, Dempsey{u2019}s writing has covered diverse and wide ranging topics including the evolution of libraries, from how library organization, services and technologies are co-evolving with the behaviours of their users to support their changing research and learning needs, to how the curatorial traditions of archives, libraries and museums have come together in the digital environment. This selection of posts, originally from Dempsey's blog, has been expertly curated by Kenneth J. Varnum to showcase Dempsey{u2019}s dual ability to firstly explore an issue and then to reveal the higher-order trends. Using this method, Dempsey provides his incisive perspective on where libraries have been in the last decade as well as his prescient insights into future trends and directions."--From publisher's website

"Understanding the Collective Collection: Towards a System-wide Perspective on Library Print Collections brings together the important work that OCLC Research has done for the community in providing a quantitative, analytic, system-wide view of library collections. This body of work has established an evidence base that has allowed and encouraged libraries to begin the shift from local provisioning of library collections and services to increased reliance on cooperative infrastructure, collective collections, shared technology platforms, and 'above-the-institution' management strategies"--Publisher website

OCLC Research and Ithaka S+R are examining the impact of increased institutional differentiation in universities on the organization of academic libraries and the services they provide. For decades, models of excellence in academic library service have been shaped by a collections-centric paradigm in which the size of local print inventory is considered a key indicator of quality. OCLC Research and Ithaka are joining forces to develop a new framework for understanding the fit between emerging library service paradigms and university types

An Exploration of the Irish presence in the published record by Brian F Lavoie( )

1 edition published in 2018 in English and held by 19 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Ireland's global cultural profile, and the widespread interest in "Irishness," can be partially understood through the island's manifestation in the published record. Using WorldCat, this publication offers reflections on the Irish presence in the published record, including its size and salient characteristics, evolving trends, and patterns of global diffusion. While our exploration of the Irish presence is not exhaustive, it does sketch out the contours of this important piece of the overall published record, and hopefully inspires ideas for new modes of inquiry into Ireland's distinctive cultural influence around the world. Not incidentally, this study also highlights the indispensable role of libraries as repositories and caretakers of the creative outputs of Ireland and all nations
The emergence of the Collective Collection : analyzing aggregate print library holdings by Lorcan Dempsey( )

2 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 19 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

As the network continues to reconfigure personal, business, and institutional relationships, it is natural that we also continue to see changes in how library collections are managed: changes in focus, boundaries, and value. One important trend is that libraries and the organizations that provide services to them will devote more attention to system-wide organization of collections--whether the "system" is a consortium, a region, or a country. Recently, print collections have also been the subject of such shared attention. Libraries are beginning to evolve arrangements that will facilitate long-term shared management of the print literature as individual libraries begin to manage down their local capacity. The collective collection has been a major interest of OCLC Research. This is to be expected given the data in WorldCat about collective library holdings and OCLC's goal to make shared working among libraries more efficient. As interest in coordinated management of the collective print collection grows, OCLC thought it was a useful time to pull together some of OCLC's writings on this topic in a single volume. This short piece provides an environmental introduction for the contributions in the report, "Understanding the Collective Collection: Towards a System-Wide Perspective on Library Print Collections" (Dempsey et al. 2013).
