Writing development : a longitudinal study of multiple continuua of conceptual understandings within the writing process as displayed by first grade writers by Janice Witchey Eitelgeorge( )

This study traced the writing development of three first grade writers over a yearlong inquiry. The three case studies were representative of the range of writing within the classroom from one of the lowest functioning writers to the highest. Multiple continua of conceptual understandings within writing development emerged as categories for noting incremental progressions in each conceptual understanding. The analysis revealed that writing development was not linear and simultaneous along the continua but rather reflected the recursiveness of learning. As cognitive processing was focused on one new conceptual understanding, another regressed to a level which had been internalized and could be called upon at an automatic level while others at the time appeared to remain constant. The supportive whole language classroom and the climate of the writing workshop permitted a richness for textual ideas and collaborative interaction which is evidenced in the documents shared
