When Sir Henry Channon died in 1958, he left a detailed and almost continuous diary which he had kept for nearly forty years. In 1918, at the age of twenty-one, he had arrived in Europe from Chicago. With his charm, ability and ambition he rapidly rose in English society. He married Lady Honor Guinness, became an M.P and, during the crucial years 1938-41, served at the Foreign Office as Parliamentary Private Secretary to R.A Butler. His friendships weremany and varied: King Edward VIII, Lady Cunard, Terence Rattigan, the Duff Coopers and the Wavells were among those who attended his famous salon in Belgrave Square. In this edition of his diaries, new lightis cast upon such episodes as the abdication, the downfall of the Chamberlain Government and the dissensions between Sir Winston Churchill and Lord Wavell
