Autobiography of Anna Howard Shaw (1847-1919), daughter of Thomas Shaw and Nicholas Stott. Her parents moved from Scotland to London to Newcastle-on-Tyne, where Anna Howard Shaw was born. Her father then immigrated to New Bedford, Massachusetts, the family following in 1851, and then moving to Lawrence, Massachusetts. In 1859 they moved to forest land near Grand Rapids, Michigan. Anna became a school teacher, and later a Methodist minister (after some advanced college training in New Hampshire and Europe). She explained that "there was at that time a movement on foot to license women to preach in the Methodist Church, and Dr. Peck was ambitious to be the first presi- ding elder to have a woman ordained for the Methodist ministry"--(P. 58). She served as a Methodist minister at East Dennis, Cape Cod, Massachusetts for several years, and then went to Boston Medical School in 1882 to become a medical doctor. She also began to lecture for the Massachusetts Woman Suffrage Association, and later became an officer of the national association, invited to speak in cities throughout the United States and Europe. She even gave a talk in the Tabernacle in Salt Lake City
