Ab 1905 reiste Bela Bartók (oft zusammen mit Zoltan Kodály) im Zuge musikethnologischer Feldforschungen in unberührte Regionen Südeuropas und brachte von dort über 10.000 Melodien mit, die er wissenschaftlich seriös aufarbeitete. Aber auch sein eigenes kompositorisches Werk blieb davon nicht unberührt, Werke wie die 15 ungarischen Bauernlieder oder die 6 rumänischen Volkstänze (die auch in zahlreichen Bearbeitungen vorliegen), legen davon Zeugnis ab. In seinen 14 Bagatellen aus dem Jahr 1908 hat er, beeinflusst von der ungarischen Volksmusik einerseits und von der Klangsprache Debussys andererseits, den Weg zu einer neuen Klangsprache eingeschlagen, die von seinen Zeitgenossen begeistert aufgenommen wurde. Aus der späteren Schaffensphase des Komponisten stammt die meisterhafte Sonate für Klavier (1926), in der er das Klavier über weite Strecken als perkussives Instrument einsetzt, und die Klavierfassung seiner Tanzsuite für Orchester. Alan Planès ist der Interpret all dieser Werke, die als bedeutende Klavierwerke des 20. Jahrhunderts schon in kleineren Klaviermusikbeständen angeboten werden sollten
