Changes in cigarette-related disease risks and their implication for prevention and control( Book )

2 editions published in 1997 in English and held by 230 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume presents results from three large, more contemporary prospective mortality studies and provides longer followup for two of the older studies dating from the 1950's. When observations from the more contemporary studies are compared with those from the 1950's, one important but disturbing conclusion is apparent - mortality risks among continuing smokers, both males and females, have increased. In fact, relative risks for smokers compared to never-smokers have increased for all major smoking-related diseases - coronary heart disease (CHD), lung cancer, other smoking-related cancers, stroke, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This increase over time in the relative risks for smokers compared to never-smokers has occured despite a dramatic decline in cardiovascular disease (CVD) death rates in the U.S. population, suggesting that the decline in CVD death rates has been proportionately greater among never-smokers than among continuing smokers. The clearest message that is drawn from the enormous quantity of data presented in this monograph is that smoking prevention and cessation efforts are complementary, not alternative, solutions to the current epidemic of diseases caused by smoking

Improving the presumptive disability decision-making process for veterans( Book )

7 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 77 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The United States has long recognized and honored the service and sacrifices of its military and veterans. Veterans who have been injured by their service (whether their injury appears during service or afterwards) are owed appropriate health care and disability compensation. For some medical conditions that develop after military service, the scientific information needed to connect the health conditions to the circumstances of service may be incomplete. When information is incomplete, Congress or the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) may need to make a "presumption" of service connection so that a group of veterans can be appropriately compensated. The missing information may be about the specific exposures of the veterans, or there may be incomplete scientific evidence as to whether an exposure during service causes the health condition of concern. For example, when the exposures of military personnel in Vietnam to Agent Orange could not be clearly documented, a presumption was established that all those who set foot on Vietnam soil were exposed to Agent Orange

Peer review of EPA's Risk and Exposure Assessment to Support the Review of the Secondary National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS) for Oxides of Nitrogen and Sulfur : second draft( Book )

2 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

"The Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee (CASAC) NOX & SOX Secondary NAAQS Review Panel met on July 22-23, 2009 to review EPA's Risk and Exposure Assessment (REA) to Support the Review of the Secondary National Ambient Air Quality Standard for Oxides of Nitrogen and Sulfur: Second Draft. This letter has been reviewed and approved by the chartered CASAC at a public conference call on August 20, 2009. In this letter, CASAC offers general comments and recommendations for finalizing the REA. We also address the Agency's framework for developing the forthcoming Policy Assessment. During the meeting, EPA's Office of Air Quality Planning and Standards (OAQPS) informed the Panel of the final schedule for the current primary and secondary NOX and SOX NAAQS reviews and rule making. CASAC is very concerned about the schedule's implications on the policy options under consideration by the Agency for the secondary standards."--P. 1
