Arguing for atheism an introduction to the philosophy of religion by Robin Le Poidevin ( )
29 editions published between 1996 and 2014 in 3 languages and held by 1,461 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In Arguing for Atheism , Robin Le Poidevin addresses the question of whether theism - the view that there is a personal, transcendent creator of the universe - solves the deepest mysteries of existence. Philosophical defences of theism have often been based on the idea that it explains things which atheistic approaches cannot: for example, why the universe exists, and how there can be objective moral values. The main contention of Arguing for Atheism is that the reverse is true: that in fact theism fails to explain many things it claims to. Such an interpretation has been argued for recently by 'radical theologians'; Arguing for Atheism is therefore, a philosophical contribution to one of the key religious issues of our times. Designed as a text for university courses in the philosophy of religion and metaphysics, this book's accessible style and numerous explanations of important philosophical concepts and positions will also make it attractive to the general reader
Travels in four dimensions : the enigmas of space and time by Robin Le Poidevin ( Book )
19 editions published between 2003 and 2012 in 3 languages and held by 680 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Space and time are the most fundamental features of our experience, and yet they are also the most puzzling." "Robin Le Poidevin provides a clear, witty, and stimulating guide through these and many other puzzles and paradoxes. Drawing on a variety of examples from science, history, and literature, he gives a vivid sense of the difficulties raised by our ordinary ideas of space and time, and equips us to think about these problems for ourselves."--BOOK JACKET
The Philosophy of time ( Book )
19 editions published between 1993 and 2009 in English and held by 568 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"The aim of this series is to bring together important recent writings in major areas of philosophical inquiry, selected from a variety of sources, mostly periodicals, which may not be conveniently available to the university student or the general reader. The editors of each volume contribute an introductory essay on the items chosen and on the questions with which they deal. A selective bibliography is appended as a guide to further reading." "This volume presents a balanced set of readings which introduce the central topics in the philosophy of time. It is the first introductory anthology on the subject to appear for many years; two of the essays are specially written for this collection. In their introduction the editors summarize the background to the debate, and show how issues in the philosophy of time are related to other branches of philosophy."--Jacket
Agnosticism : a very short introduction by Robin Le Poidevin ( Book )
7 editions published in 2010 in English and held by 488 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"What is agnosticism? is it just the 'don't know' position on the existence of God, or is there more to it than this? Is it a belief, or the absence of belief? Often viewed with suspicion, agnosticism has played an important role in religious thought and argument. Robin Le Poidevin outlines the philosophical case for agnosticism, and what emerges is a more sophisticated and interesting attitude than a simple failure to commit to, or reject, religious belief. Challenging some common assumptions about agnosticism, he invites us to rethink our own position on God, knowledge and religion." -- Book jacket

The images of time : an essay on temporal representation by Robin Le Poidevin ( Book )
26 editions published between 2007 and 2011 in English and No Linguistic content and held by 436 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Le Poidevin brings together issues in philosophy, psychology, aesthetics, and literary theory in examining the mechanisms underlying our representation of time in various media, and brings these to bear on metaphysical debates over the real nature of time. These debates concern which aspects of time are genuinely part of time's intrinsic nature, and which, in some sense, are mind-dependent. Arguably, the most important debate concerns time's passage: does time pass in reality, or is the division of events into past, present, and future simply a reflection of our temporal perspective--a result of the interaction between a "static" world and minds capable of representing it? Le Poidevin argues that, contrary to what perception and memory lead us to suppose, time does not really pass, and this surprising conclusion can be reconciled with the characteristic features of temporal experience
Being : developments in contemporary metaphysics ( Book )
13 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 424 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"What is it for an object to persist through time? Do things have essences? What is the relation between an object and its parts? Are objects more real than their parts, or vice versa? Could there be spatio-temporally coincident objects? Do we need an ontology of truth-makers? These interrelated questions reflect the central concerns of contemporary metaphysics, which in recent years has seen an intensification of interest in ontological issues. They are the focus of the essays collected in this volume, which arose from the Being: Developments in Contemporary Metaphysics conference held at the University of Leeds in September, 2006." -- Back cover
