Algebra and algebraic thinking in school mathematics( Book )

1 edition published in 2008 in English and held by 552 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Algebra is no longer just for college-bound students. After a widespread push by NCTM and teachers across the country, algebra is now a required part of most curricula. However, students' standardized test scores are not at the level they should be. NCTM's seventieth yearbook takes a look at the status of algebra in our schools and the changes that the algebra curriculum has gone through over the past several years. Also included are successful classroom practices for developing algebraic reasoning abilities in students and for improving their overall understanding of the subject. - Publisher
Mathematics curriculum : issues, trends, and future directions( Book )

10 editions published between 2010 and 2011 in English and held by 501 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Mathematics curriculum has long been a topic of keen interest in mathematics education and remains a central issue in efforts to improve mathematics learning opportunities for students. This Yearbook continues in a long line of NCTM Yearbooks that have addressed various facets of the changing mathematics curriculum. Although some factors such as tradition can inhibit significant change, other factors such as policy (e.g., federal No Child Left Behind legislation), societal needs (mathematically literate graduates), and technological advances (computer software, calculators) foster and accelerate the need for change. In the past year alone, a major state-initiated process for developing 'common core standards' is underway. With 48 states and several territories participating in the articulation of 'college and career-ready' high school graduation expectations and common K-12 standards, 2010 promises to be a landmark year of discussion and dialogue about mathematics curriculum. This Yearbook reflects some of the many issues that the field is currently discussing so it serves as both a record of current advances and a summary of challenges regarding curriculum. We hope that it will both guide and stimulate thinking about where we have been, where we are, and where we need to go."--Publisher's description

Teaching and learning middle grades mathematics by Rheta N Rubenstein( Book )

11 editions published between 2003 and 2015 in English and German and held by 89 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Transitioning between two worlds, students in the middle grades (4-9) are no longer elementary students but are not quite ready for the challenges of secondary school. The state departments of education are beginning to recognize that the preparation of teachers for these students must change. Teaching and Learning Middle Grades Mathematics is the ideal text for future teachers who are completing their pre-service instruction. Through readings, lessons, sample middle grades exercises, and more, future teachers learn to address the teaching and learning of algebraic and geometric thinking at the level appropriate for middle grades students. The lessons in this text follow a popular collaborative teaching method used in middle schools called Launch, Explore, Share and Summarize that involves very little lecturing, a lot of group work, and class discussions. Teaching and Learning Middle Grades Mathematics will serve as a life long resources to students, as each lesson is filled with student pages which are worksheets that can be modified for use in actual middle grades classrooms. The text comes packaged with a CD-ROM that will be a valuable resource, containing professional readings that correlate directly to the lessons in the text
