Rachel Harrison : museum with walls by Rachel Harrison( Book )

5 editions published in 2010 in English and held by 198 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Rachel Harrison (born 1966) is one of the most exciting artists making sculptures today. Her assemblages of found and constructed objects carry a provisional quality, a wry sense of humor and an all-embracing intelligence. Playing with materials ranging from plinth, pedestal and corrugated cardboard to plastic ketchup bottles, insulated travel mugs and Barbie's wheelchair-bound friend, Harrison creates colorful, canny, thought-provoking constructions that are worthy peers of Rauschenberg's Combines."--Publisher's description

Amy Sillman : the all-over by Amy Sillman( Book )

2 editions published in 2017 in English and held by 96 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Sillman's works can be categorized as abstract painting, although her abstractions repeatedly allow forms and figures to be recognized. The title of the exhibition 'the ALL-OVER' refers to a concept often used to describe abstract painting. At its most literal, it refers to the practice of completely covering the canvas, a format that resists a traditional figure/ground hierarchy. The classic example of the style is embodied by the work of the American artist Jackson Pollock, though as the influential critic Clement Greenberg pointed out, the style in fact originated with the Ukrainian-American artist Janet Sobel. Sillman adapts this all-over idea, using it as the title for her exhibition, which does not feature drip paintings as such, but which updates the idea of total coverage of the canvas through mechanical means (via inkjet printing) used in combination with the gestural. Panorama, consisting of twenty-four canvases, was developed for Portikus and is here seen in its entirety for the first time. Exhibition: Portikus, Frankfurt am Main, Germany (02.07. - 11.09.2016)

Mengele's skull : the advent of a forensic aesthetics by Thomas Keenan( Book )

3 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 78 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book was commissioned to instigate, rather than represent, an exhibition. In this curatorial experiment, Thomas Keenan and Eyal Weizman were asked to produce a book and Hito Steyerl was asked to respond to their text by creating a series of works. This process constructed a form of research within the margins of science, aesthetics, and law--an entangled set of circumstances from which we can examine the fields anew"--Page 2 of cover

Otobong Nkanga : Luster and Lucre by Otobong Nkanga( Book )

4 editions published in 2017 in English and held by 53 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Otobong Nkanga?s first monograph, 'Luster and Lucre', charts an intensely productive period from 2013 to 2016, which includes exhibitions at the 8th Berlin Biennale; Portikus, Frankfurt am Main; KADIST, Paris; and M HKA, Antwerp. Its title encapsulates the complex concerns that underpin these shows: 'luster,' the illustrious shining of materials; and 'lucre,' profits and gains. With the mineral mica as her starting point, Nkanga?s research took her to archives in Berlin, Strasbourg, and Windhoek, and led her along a colonial railroad in Namibia to the historic Tsumeb mine. This rich research became works that probe the ambivalence of that which shines: poems, intricate drawings, modular sculptures that form systems of display, and performances that are both gestural and dialogical
Black paintings by Wade Guyton( Book )

With this publication, American painter Wade Guyton brings his conception of painting and its reproducibility to the book format. On Kawara again and against = On Kawara Wieder und Wider = Kawara On hanpuku to tairitsu : [exhibition] Portikus Frankfurt am Main, the Renaissance Society of Chicago, Institute of Contemporary Arts, Nagoya, Ivan Dougherty Gallery, Sydney by On Kawara( Book )

2 editions published in 1992 in English and held by 51 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"...This catalogue documents the exhibitions of On Kawara's Date paintings as they appeared in four sites on four continents. At each venue, the Date paintings, spanning the years 1966-1988, were juxtaposed with the works of twenty-four other artists, each created in the year marked in one of the Date paintings. The painted Dates, as either subjective expenditure or objective representation of time, play off the fluctuations of cultural and curatorial taste revealed by the other works on display. The presence of time and its forward progress is shown by Kawara to be paradoxically both an inescapable truth and a purely haphazard construct. This dilemma is expanded on in Faust's essay, which poetically maps the complex flow of thought set in motion by the Date paintings. In addition, the curators of each exhibition provide essays giving the background on their institutions and their conceptualizations of the exhibitions..."--Essay by Wolfgang Max Faust from The Renaissance Society, at the University of Chicago website
Lawrence Abu Hamdan : (inaudible) : a politics of listening in 4 acts by Lawrence Abu Hamdan( Book )

3 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 49 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A "politics of listening" is an intervention into and a reorganization of forms that listening takes rather than a call for free speech or for a platform for voices to be heard. Listening is a political act, a pedagogical process, and an activity that can lead to the development of an organized protocol for engagement. In his art and research, Beirut-based artist Lawrence Abu Hamdan explores the perception of language, sound, and listening. National identity, human rights, and the administration of justice are recurrent themes in his work. The techniques used in his audio-aesthetic practice have been used to conduct forensic audio analysis for several legal investigations. This monograph includes a series of transcripts of live speech from sermons, monologues, testimonies, and interviews made over the course of the last five years. Exhibition: Kunst Halle Sankt Gallen, Gallen, Switzerland (11.07.2015-13.09.2015) / Portikus, Frankfurt/Main, Germany (13.02.2016-10.04.2016)

El Taco by Guillermo Faivovich( Book )

2 editions published between 2010 and 2012 in English and held by 46 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

DOCUMENTA (13)'s first artist book records the first stage of a project by Guillermo Faivovich (1977 in Buenos Aires) and Nicolás Goldberg (1978 in Paris). Since 2006, the artists have been researching Campo del Cielo, a meteorite shower that occurred in northern Argentina four thousand years ago. El Taco, one of those meteorites, was divided in half in an intricate procedure at the Max Planck Institute in Mainz, Germany halves which have since been located in Washington's Smithsonian Institute and Buenos Aires's planetarium. The two parts of El Taco will be reunited for the first time at an exhibition at Portikus, a step in their journey toward dOCUMENTA (13), where a second part of the project 'A Guide to Campo del Cielo' will take place in 2012. This publication documents the meteorite's long story which involves the artists's archival investigations going back to the fifteenth century and a process that entails the use of various media such as photography and site-specific installations
Minouk Lim : united paradox( Book )

2 editions published in 2017 in German and English and held by 45 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

What role does historiography play in the formation of the present? How does contemporary experience inform the commemoration of historical events or lack thereof Minouk Lim explores history in the present tense, its media representation, collective memory, ritual, and trauma through her exhibition, publication, and broadcasting station United Paradox. The South Korea in Lim's project is a nation with a hole in its chest: a nation of families divided by territorial disputes and traumatized by civilian massacres, victims of an authoritarian power in service of ideological control and economic growth. While reflecting on the representation and reappropriation of historical events in South Korea, Lim and the contributors to this publication explore ways of working through the past in a present that prefers to forget. Exhibition: Portikus, Frankfurt, Germany (14.05.- 05.07.2015)
