The Old Law of Bizkaia (1452) : introductory study and critical edition by Gregorio Monreal Zia( Book )

5 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 387 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In 1452, Bizkaians assembled at the Oak of Gernika and approved the Fuero Viejo de Bizkaia (the Old Law of Bizkaia) one of Europe's most important yet little known medieval legal codes. Its laws encompassed an extraordinary range of individual and collective liberties, anticipating the 18th-century Declarations of Rights contained in the constitutions of the U.S. and France. It was extraordinarily modern in both spirit and letter and attracted the attention and admiration of John Adams and William Wordsworth. Its influence survives to the present day, underpinning Bizkaian and Basque claims to their own political identity within the Spanish state. Distributed for the Center for Basque Studies

Korrika : Basque ritual for ethnic identity by Teresa del Valle( Book )

1 edition published in 1994 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Korrika, a ritual that first emerged in 1980, is an annual running event in which thousands of people from all social spheres join together in a run to every corner of the Basque Country. Carrying a baton bearing a message in the Basque language, each person runs for one kilometer. In clear and precise prose, Korrika vividly describes this modern way of expressing and reinforcing identity in the Basque Country." "Approaching the ritual through the symbolic strategies of its organizers and participants del Valle introduces the reader to the run from beginning to end. This methodology offers the reader the opportunity to experience the mood of the race and to grasp what the symbol means in the context of the entire ritual." "Korrika describes and interprets modern Basque identity in terms of traditional symbols and activities. Furthermore, the book explores the process of selecting symbols in the midst of cultural and political change." "Arguing against the popular notion that ritual is merely the invention of a small, and manipulative group, del Valle makes a major contribution to current literature about the creation of traditions. As such, Korrika will be important reading for students and professors of anthropology, Basque studies, political science, contemporary history, and the history of social movements."--Jacket
Improvisational poetry from the Basque country by Gorka Aulestia( Book )

3 editions published in 1995 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Improvisational Poetry from the Basque Country introduces the Basque bertsolari to the English-speaking world and provides an understanding of an interesting cultural phenomenon - the artist in Basque society who is capable of improvising verse on any subject spontaneously and setting it to music. The tradition is at least several centuries old and runs the gamut from amateurish efforts to periodic national championship competitions. These competitions draw thousands of listeners and pack theaters while many other thousands tune their radios to the broadcasts of the performances. A performance consists of a bertsolari, a live audience, and a challenge to put a specific theme into song. Within seconds the bertsolari is expected to create beautiful verse, set to music. The bertsolari's impromptu verses demonstrate his knowledge of the Basque language and history, as well as his ability to captivate an audience with fresh verse. Aulestia takes a scholarly and in-depth look at the art of the bertsolari. In a fascinating text, the author examines the history of a tradition that is truly unique and completely Basque. He introduces and analyzes the performing styles of great bertsolariak, including Xabier Amuriza and Jon Azpillaga. From the bertsolari's roots in the old Basque Country to the social phenomenon it is today, Aulestia's look at the improvisational oral literature of the Basques is an essential addition to their written history
