The blue stain : a novel of a racial outcast by
Hugo Bettauer(
)
14 editions published between 2012 and 2018 in German and English and held by 489 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Hugo Bettauer's The Blue Stain, a novel of racial mixing and "passing," starts and ends in Georgia but also takes the reader to Vienna and New York. First published in 1922, the novel tells the story of Carletto, son of a white European academic and an African-American daughter of former slaves, who, having passed as white in Europe and fled to America after losing his fortune, resists being seen as "black" before ultimately accepting that identity and joining the early movement for civil rights. Never before translated into English, this is the first novel in which a German-speaking European author addresses early twentieth-century racial politics in the United States--not only in the South but also in the North. There is an irony, however: while Bettauer's narrative aims to sanction a white/European egalitarianism with respect to race, it nevertheless exhibits its own brand of racism by asserting that African Americans need extensive enculturation before they are to be valued as human beings. The novel therefore serves as a unique historical account of transnational and transcultural racial attitudes of the period that continue to reverberate in our present globalized world."--

Der Frauenmörder : Roman by
Hugo Bettauer(
)
26 editions published between 1922 and 2020 in German and English and held by 103 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

She walked down Kärntnerstraße and suddenly stopped in front of a display. Kolo, close beside her, felt her hot breath and the soft, full arm that pressed unobtrusively to him. And then his decision was made. "Go," he said to himself, "get it, the wife has money, probably a lot of money, and maybe a nice flat where you can rest and eat." Eat, yes, eat, heaven, the saliva was in the mouth with hunger and it roared in his ears. Yes, but, she will demand her reward, will wallow in his arms and cling to his lips. Brr, how horrible! But can eat and rest and maybe take a bath and money, money ... "Pimp!" Called it to him. "Koloman Baron of Isbaregg, do you know how you used to think about men selling love for money?" "Nonsense," Kolo answered. "That was the Baron with the many ancestors and the great career in mind! Today I am the homeless Isbaregg, who has not eaten for twenty-four hours and looks at the world from below. Man must eat food, eat and rest and have money - everything else is sausage! Go with it, eat it and then play the Zechpreller! That can be funny

Hugo Bettauer(
Book
)
2 editions published in 2017 in French and held by 17 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
