The largest part of the collection documents the Civil War service of Elliot C. Pierce of Weymouth, an officer in the 13th Mass. Infantry from 1861-64. Letters to his family and fiancee, Mary Ellen Baker, describe service in Md. and Va.; the occupation of Winchester, Va. by Union troops; and engagements at 2nd Bull Run where he was wounded, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, and Spotsylvania. Pierce also served on detached duty from the 13th as Chief of the 1st Ambulance Corps from 1863 - Apr. 1864. The papers also include commissions, ordnance stores, muster rolls, returns, two scrapbooks of clippings (1861-62, one partially obscuring the pagesof Elijah's account book), and Pierce's diary kept from 1863-64.
