Critical crossroads : youth, criminal justice and literacy : literature review : transformative literacy for youth in conflict
with the law by Avril Colenutt(
)
2 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 51 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Literacy is a vital part of transformative change for Youth in Conflict with the Law; Canadian, American and British studies reviewed here demonstrate that it is not uncommon for youth in conflict with the law to have challenges with literacy. The reviewed literature also demonstrates that literacy is a successful element in preventing criminal involvement for youth, for reducing criminal involvement for youth already involved in crime, and for increasing employment and reducing recidivism in offenders. As a whole, this review aims to offer resources; details of available literacy programming structures, outcomes and measurements; awareness of common challenges and barriers to successful programming; and recommendations for those seeking to create or adapt literacy programming that can be transformative for youth in conflict with the law

An Inside approach : organizing integrated learning opportunities by
Christine Camilleri(
Book
)
2 editions published in 1990 in English and held by 19 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This guide is intended to help people improve their reading, writing, and numeracy skills within existing organizations, services, or community activities. It is divided into two sections. The first gives some background information on literacy in Canada, adult learners, and the rationale for integrating learning into existing opportunities. The second focuses on implementing the approaches. Planning and organizing learning initiatives, recruiting participants, developing options and opportunities for improving skills, training volunteers, and evaluating the effectiveness of an approach are addressed in the second section. In addition, some misconceptions about people with reading difficulties are addressed. Profiles of adult learners are included as well as approaches suitable for facilitating adult learning. An overview of the planning, organizing, and implementing process is provided. A range of options to take advantage of learning opportunities is discussed: peer learning, learning with computers, family involvement, and learning through oral stories. Steps in planning and implementing workshops for volunteers are outlined. A section on evaluating the progress of learning initiatives and individuals as well as 43 references complete the guide. Literacy and Health Project, phase one : making the world healthier and safer for people who can't read by
Burt Perrin(
Book
)
3 editions published between 1989 and 1990 in English and held by 14 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
A research study examined the relationship between illiteracy and health. The study used the following methods for gathering information: review of health status data from major Canadian health status surveys; multidisciplinary literature review across areas including medicine, health education, development, literacy, education, poverty, and socioeconomic status; questionnaire sent to health and literacy organizations across Ontario; three case studies at different sites in Ontario; and key informant interviews. The major finding was that illiteracy had a major, negative impact on health. This finding was consistent across a wide variety of measures of health status, including overall levels of mortality and morbidity, self-rated health, activity limitation, infant development, accidents, and a wide range of diseases. Evidence suggested that illiteracy leads to poorer health through a combination of both direct and indirect intervening variables. Potential solutions are grouped under the headings of social policy action, heightened awareness within the health community, working together with the community, provision of health information in nonwritten forms, and simplification of written information about health. (Appendixes include 93 references and observations of community organizations about health and literacy problems.) (Ylb)
