11 editions published between 2007 and 2015 in French and held by 132 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The social basis of scientific discoveries by Augustine Brannigan( Book )

5 editions published in 1996 in French and held by 101 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

What constitutes a scientific discovery? How do discoveries happen and how are they recognised as such? These are questions of central concern to scientists and philosophers. In this book, Augustine Brannigan provides a critical examination of the major theories which have been devised to account for discoveries and innovations in science, and develops a fresh alternative. Dr Brannigan begins by arguing that most theories fall into one of two classes: mentalistic theories, which describe how ideas come into the mind, and cultural theories, which describe how they 'mature' in a particular culture. His account reveals a series of empirical and methodological problems that make these existing models untenable and he proposes as an alternative a sociological approach, which draws attention not to what makes discoveries happen, but to the processes whereby certain achievements are recognised and labelled as discoveries. This approach is illustrated in detail with a number of important scientific cases. The book throws light not only on the conventional character of discoveries but also on the folk elements in popular theories about discovery, such as genius, gestalt switch and simultaneous invention

3 editions published in 2012 in French and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

1 edition published in 2013 in French and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In Geneva, Ferdinand de Saussure professed, by developing gradually his presentation, three lectures of general linguistics between 1907 and 1911. Having examined the fundamental notions by following, among others texts, reading notes of the teacher, the author focused on sources and elaboration of the first lecture. Louis Caille and Albert Riedlinger are among the students who benefited from this lecture. The author completes the transcription of the stenography by Caille, and makes the transcription of a new manuscript releaved by Daniele Gambarara in august 2011, and therefore can compare with the Riedlinger's already known notetakings. The triple transcription - detailed according to the ranking of the articles of the remarkable Engler's edition - allows to specify the conditions of elaboration of the text of Cours I.Besides the examination of manuscripts, of the Caille manuscript, and of its marginal notes, additional researches are made, as well on the historical conditions - genealogical and administrative concerning the registered and examined candidates -, that on the archives of the university concerning this period for the essential checks. All these informations allow to favor the hypothesis that Louis Caille acted as a transcriber for this new lecture whose introduction also modified several programs of this university. As a result, de facto, the only source strictly speaking of Cours I is this Caille stenography, contrary to what suggested until now the knowledge of texts considered inevitably in the historic order of their acquisitions; the elements of the synthesis of the three lectures - the Cours de Linguistique Générale (CLG), published by Ch. Bally and A. Séchehaye - are distinguished from each other, and its elaboration is analyzable accurately

1 edition published in 2014 in French and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

A new question has arisen in the medical literature recently: must spirituality be included as a specific dimension in the care system? If several scholars arrive at a consensus in favour of this integration, considerable ethical and epistemological worries have to be expressed. This thesis in medical ethics and religious studies critically analyses this phenomenon, more specifically in the context of oncology. Our main concern is to discuss the different arguments given in medical literature justifying the necessity to develop spiritual care. In doing so, we discovered that the patients' point of view is never taken into account, posing the question: for which reasons patients with advanced cancer would (or would not) expect spiritual care from the hospital? In response, we interviewed 20 patients undergoing treatment in a French hospital, using a semi directive methodology. Results show that patients do not expect spiritual care from the hospital but wish to be recognised as human beings and not only as "patients". Data invites us to consider the integration of spirituality in the hospital through an ethic of recognition as opposed to an ethic of care
