Salvador Dalí : masterpieces from the collection of the Salvador Dalí Museum by Kenneth Wach( Book )

4 editions published in 1996 in English and held by 657 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Salvador Dali Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida, houses the most comprehensive collection in the world of the art of Salvador Dali (1904-1989), the renowned Surrealist painter. From the Museum's extensive holdings, forty masterpieces have been selected for this volume by the art historian Kenneth Wach. All forty are reproduced in color, as full-page plates. For each, Mr. Wach has written an illuminating commentary, discussing both the works' style, in art-historical terms, and their often complex psychological content. In addition, the book's general introduction provides a broad overview of Dali's flamboyant career as an artist. It traces the course of Dali's development from his first childhood efforts in Catalonia to his participation in the Surrealist movement in Paris in the 1920s and 1930s, to his sojourn in the United States during World War II and his late works executed in Spain. Among the famous images included here are luminous still lifes from Dali's youth, which show his debts to the Old Masters. There are also a number of his remarkable Surrealist beach scenes, with their mysterious vistas and obsessive sexuality. Several troubled depictions of the distorted human body, dating from the difficult period of the Spanish Civil War and World War II, culminate in the expectant Geopoliticus Child Watching the Birth of the New Man. The volume features as well some prime examples of Dali's later "nuclear mysticism," where traditional religious iconography is joined with motifs taken from modern physics. Notable among the later works is The Disintegration of the Persistence of Memory, a radical reinterpretation of his celebrated earlier painting with limp watches, now reconceived in terms of Albert Einstein's theories of space and time. In scale, the works reproduced as colorplates range from Dali's epic, mural-size canvas The Discovery of America by Christopher Columbus to a small, subtly rendered for his Christ of St. John of the Cross. Also illustrated, in black and white, is a representative selection of Dali's drawings, demonstrating his consistently fine draftsmanship through all the phases of his career. A brief preface on the history of the Salvador Dali Museum, a detailed chronology of the artist's life, a bibliography, and an index complete the volume
Dali : the Salvador Dali Museum collection by Robert S Lubar( Book )

7 editions published in 2000 in English and held by 649 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book presents the complete paintings of the Salvador Dali Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida. The 94 full-color reproductions in Dali: The Salvador Dali Museum Collection include the museum's most recent painting acquisitions and provide a review of Dali's career. The book also includes his later, more cryptic works that arose from his postwar fascination with the interaction between history, science, and mysticism." "Leading Dali scholar Robert S. Lubar provides an introduction, "The Martyrdom of Avida Dollars," that investigates the Dali phenomenon and the artist's importance as a cultural "distorting mirror." Lubar also gives commentary on each of the museum's paintings, creating in effect a catalogue raisonne for this popular collection and contributing valuable new scholarship on Dali."--BOOK JACKET
Dalí & film by Salvador Dalí( Book )

5 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 252 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Dalí was one of the most famous and also one of the most notorious artists of the 20th century, his flamboyant personal style establishing him as a showman in the popular imagination. Dalí Duchamp by Dawn Ades( Book )

3 editions published in 2017 in English and held by 219 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Dali/Duchamp examines in detail the often-overlooked relationship between two of the twentieth century's most famous artists. Though polar opposites at first glance, Duchamp, the father of conceptual art who rejected painting in 1918, and the more showman-like Dali, the exceptional painter of fantastical landscapes, were united by a combination of humour and scepticism that led both to challenge conventional views of art and life. After meeting in the 1930s through mutual contacts within the Surrealist group, they maintained a firm friendship over the following decades, spending time together in Paris, New York and Catalonia, where Duchamp purchased a summer house in Cadaques, close to Dali's home in Port Lligat. Throughout the book, expert contributors explore themes common to both artists, chief among them eroticism and identity, and both men's surprising engagement with science, optics, religion and myth. Each section is sumptuously illustrated with key pieces from both artists' bodies of work, and features previously unpublished photographs, letters and ephemera that demonstrate the enduring warmth of their friendship

Wifredo Lam in North America by Wifredo Lam( Book )

1 edition published in 2007 in English and held by 160 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Lam's paintings craft Surrealist conjunctions from Cuban religious iconography--especially from tribal masks--and retrieve a suppressed Afro-Cuban culture that ultimately sets them apart from any movement. It particularly addresses the role of Lam's Afro-Cuban ethnicity in the development of his unusual hybridized vocabulary, a blend of Paris School, Surrealist and Afro-Cuban aesthetics."--Amazon

7 editions published in 2002 in Spanish and held by 80 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Between 1909 and 1918 figurative sculpture becomes a constructive syntax, which denies perspective and a unique point of view. Cubism, characterised by a deep reflection on the values of flat plane and volumes, makes the leap into three-dimensional objects. Pablo Picasso's 1909 piece, Cabeza de mujer (Fernande) is considered the first Cubist sculpture, and introduces a new style of work that many other artists follow. Its appearance is due to the spirit of a new order, which was already present in painting. For Picasso, this sculpture is a further innovation, in addition to those from his early production. However, other artists develop their work after this piece, as did Raymond Duchamp-Villon, Alexander Archipenko, Henri Laurens, Jacques Lipchitz and Umberto Boccioni, which gives way to new sculptural forms in cubist patterns ..."
