13 editions published between 2013 and 2014 in English and Undetermined and held by 321 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Benjamin Leigh Smith discovered and named dozens of islands in the Arctic but published no account of his pioneering explorations. Yet, the Royal Geographic Society's Sir Clements R Markham referred to him as a polar explorer of the first rank. Travelling to the Arctic islands that Leigh Smith explored and criss-crossing England to uncover unpublished journals, diaries, and photographs, archaeologist and writer P J Capelotti details Leigh Smith's five major Arctic expeditions and places them within the context of the great polar explorations in the nineteenth century

By airship to the North Pole : an archaeology of human exploration by Peter Joseph Capelotti( Book )

6 editions published in 1999 in English and held by 302 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

By Airship to the North Pole chronicles the adventures of Swedish engineer Salomon August Andree, who made the first failed attempt to reach the North Pole in a hydrogen balloon in 1897 and of American journalist Walter Wellman who organized and led three unsuccessful air expeditions from 1907 to 1909. The book investigates the stories behind the quests to reach this remote and inhospitable outpost by air and examines how those stories were created and reported by the press. What he uncovers allows readers to reflect on the distortions of the written historical record, particularly unkind to Wellman, and what that may tell us about our own age of exploration as we look to the last frontiers in space

The whaling expedition of the Ulysses, 1937-38 by Quentin R Walsh( Book )

3 editions published in 2010 in English and held by 164 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In the spring of 1937, Coast Guard Lieutenant Quentin Robert Walsh received a special assignment aboard the whaling factory ship Ulysses. His orders were to monitor the commercial operation's compliance with international agreements protecting marine life, and what he observed shocked him. The Ulysses flew the American flag, but Walsh quickly realized that the venture was a foreign affair intent on harvesting whales of illegal size and importing the resulting whale oil duty-free into the U.S. market. This behemoth floating "factory" killed with appalling efficiency in order to reap tremendous profits. Over 3,600 whales were butchered during the ship's ten-month cruise.--publisher

5 editions published in 2004 in English and held by 130 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Franz Josef Land is a forbidding place, isolated by geography and history. Lying above the Arctic Circle in the northernmost province of Russia, this remote archipelago was discovered by Westerners in 1873. Chicago journalist Walter Wellman led the first American party there as part of a North Pole expedition in 1898-1899. His second-in-command, Evelyn Briggs Baldwin, kept a journal of the trip. Previsouly unpublished, it reveals much about one of the last great periods of exploration - including the violence, chicanery, and racism that characterized many of the American efforts." "Baldwin's journal paints a more realistic picture of the expedition than did Wellman's communiques sent home for mass consumption. Correspondence between Baldwin and Wellman is included, and expedition notes list supplies, geographic features observed, and doctor's notes. Editor P.J. Capelotti provides an extended introduction, and the text is illustrated with maps, depictions of dramatic events on the trip, and several photographs."--Jacket
