Hypnerotomachia Poliphili = The strife of love in a dream by Francesco Colonna( Book )

1 edition published in 1999 in English and held by 374 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"It is hard to believe that the Hypnerotomachia Poliphili, printed by Aldus Manutius in 1499, one of the most famous books in the world, read by every Renaissance intellectual and endlessly referred to in studies of art and culture ever since, has never appeared in English. One reason, no doubt, is the length and difficulty of the text. It is a strange, pagan, pedantic, erotic, allegorical, mythological romance relating in highly stylized Italian the quest of Poliphilo for his beloved Polia. The author (presumed to be Francesco Colonna, a friar of dubious reputation) was obsessed by architecture, landscape and costume - it is not going too far to say sexually obsessed - and its 174 woodcuts are a primary source for Renaissance ideas on both buildings and gardens. In 1592 a beginning was made to produce an English version but the translator gave up after only a third of the text. Now, at last, the task has been triumphantly accomplished by Joscelyn Godwin, who succeeds in reproducing all its wayward charm and arcane learning in language accessible to the modern reader."--Jacket

At the beach by Babette Katz( Book )

1 edition published in 1988 in English and held by 67 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"A visual narrative in black and white linoleum block prints, At the Beach chronicles both the events of a day at the beach and the rise and fall of one man in a wordless cautionary tale of youth and ambition. The story begins at sunrise as the empty beach fills with people, in the midst of which an infant appears in the arms of its mother. The crowd clusters around the child, watching and supporting him as he matures into a young man. Nurtured and encouraged, the man develops lofty ambitions; he reaches - literally - for the stars. When he falls to earth, burned by the sun, he is ignored by those who raised him, who fold their umbrellas and head home, leaving him alone with the setting sun."

The word returned : artist books by Ken Campbell by Ken Campbell( Book )

2 editions published in 1996 in English and held by 56 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"'The Word Returned' is two books in one, dos-à-dos, back to back. The books share similar design and content. Sometimes what is on the left in one is on the right in the other; what is black in one is white in the other; what is up in one is down in the other; and what is obscure in one is readable in the other. When the books are turned they turn into their other selves: they rotate. There is no end to process unless that end is desired. A book with no beginning, a book with no ending. The Celtic custom of rejoicing at death and mourning at birth is echoed in the dos-à-dos form of the book. My poem 'Dear Judas' is dedicated to my family, those people who jump out of rocks. Other brief texts hint at Adam as Golem in the earth, and the release and return of a dying Gaul to his statue's marbled fount."--Artist's website

Deck of cards by Peter H Beaman( Book )

1 edition published in 1989 in English and held by 48 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"As the title suggests, this oversized deck of cards, containing 52 chapters based on the interactions of five characters, can be shuffled and dealt (read) in any order. The loose sheets are cut to resemble a deck of playing cards and are printed with the text on the obverse and illustrations on the reverse in playing-card fashion. The illustrations, done in collaboration, have their own shuffled collage-like look. A neat production. References: Johanna Drucker, The Century of Artists' Books, 1995."
