DURING an investigation of the toxicity of organic solvents to seeds it was found that those of higher plants could be soaked in acetone for periods of up to six months and still germinate readily, provided that the solvent was removed before the seeds were soaked in water. There was no reduction in viability, in contrast to that reported when dehydrated moss was soaked in ethanol or acetono for 1 h1
