Hugo Hamilton wurde 1953 als Sohn eines irischen Vaters und einer deutschen Mutter in Dublin geboren. Er arbeitete zunächst als Journalist, bevor er Kurzgeschichten und Romane veröffentlichte. Als DAAD-Stipendiat lebte und arbeitete er 2001/2002 ein Jahr lang in Berlin. Mit seinen Erinnerungsbänden 'Gescheckte Menschen' (dt. 2004) und 'Der Matrose im Schrank' (dt. 2006) erregte er auch in Deutschland Aufsehen . 2007 erschien sein Reisetagebuch auf den Spuren Heinrich Bölls 'Die redselige Insel' und zuletzt der Roman 'Der irische Freund' (dt. 2011). 2004 erhielt er in Paris den 'Femina-Preis' für ausländische Literatur. Hugo Hamilton lebt mit seiner Familie in Dublin
