A comparison of the antigenic properties of erythrocytic Babesia bigemina in acute and chronic blood borne and tick borne infections of cattle by K. C Thompson( Book )

1 edition published in 1974 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The purpose of this study was to determine possible antigenic differences in the causative organisms of the acute and chronic blood borne and tick borne Babesia bigemina infections of cattle. It was anticipated that the results of the research would further aid in the understanding of the mechanism of immunity of babesial infections. In addition, the antigens may possible be used in the development of new serologic techniques or vaccines. A babesia bigemina field isolate was purified by 4 rapid serial passages through 5 splenectomized calves within 6 ½ days, and a stabilate of the isolated B. bigemina was established. The larval progeny of engorged female Boophilus microplus ticks were screened for the presence of Anaplasma marginale or Babesia spp. The nonifected ticks resulting from the screening were maintained primarily on noninfected splenectomized calves. Disease free guinea pigs were also utilized with only moderate success. Various stages of ticks were held without feeding in desiccator jars for periods of 1 to 2 months. Noninfected B. microplus ticks were successfully infected by placing them on calves inoculated intravenously with the B. bigemina stabilate
Genetic variances and covariances of percent protein, bushel weight, heading date and plant height in hard red spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) by Abdul Fattah Khayat( Book )

1 edition published in 1971 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Nine strains of hard red spring wheat and the variety Milam, a hard red semi-winter wheat were used to make ten non-random crosses. F₂ families in the F₃ and F₃ families in the F₄ generations were used to estimate genetic variances and covariances. Tests were grown at two locations and included 468 F₂ families and 744 F₃ families. Parents and F₂ populations also were included in the tests. Each cross was planted in a randomized complete block with two replications. Percent protein was determined by the Udy dye-binding method. Using the additive model with dominance the mean estimate of dominance variance from F₂ and F₃ families was very high relative to the additive variance. The dominance to additive variance ratio was 22. Limited seed supply of F₂ in the F₃ resulted unequal stands and was believed to have resulted in unequal completion which gave a large estimate of the genetic variance. This large variance resulted in the unrealistic dominance variance. However, deriving the additive and dominance components from data of the F₄ generation in which stands were equal still led to a high dominance to additive variance ratio of 5.5. Using data form College Station only resulted in a dominance to additive variance ratio of 1.5. It was concluded that the additive model with dominance did not fit these populations.
