Teaching scientific thinking at the high school level by William Shockley( Book )

4 editions published between 1900 and 1964 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The purpose of the study was to test (1) the effectiveness of a way of thinking about problems and (2) the effects of introducing junior high school students to the logic of scientific thinking. The study had two objectives (1) to teach the process of search for an answer and (2) to teach the logical structure of important principles. Teaching sessions had two major parts (1) teaching a set of logical games and (2) conducting experiments to derive a scientific principle. The study was conducted in two parts--(1) a 15-week session conducted by 3 teachers in a team teaching arrangement and (2) a smaller summer session conducted by 1 teacher using an innovation in teaching method. While the results must be considered suggestive rather than conclusive, significant cognitive development was noted on various measuring devices. The lack of uniform results was in part ascribed to difficulties in establishing a tight research design. However, the study has shown that given appropriate conditions, refinement of procedures, and sensitive testing devices, a significant demonstration of the effects of the program almost certainly could be achieved. Firing line : Shockley's thesis( Visual )

2 editions published between 1974 and 2011 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Mr. Shockley's current fame, or notoriety, came not in his official field, but rather in a field of more recent interest to him, eugenics. Like, say, Arthur Jensen and Richard Hernstein, Mr. Shockley was widely reviled for talking about the heritability of certain traits. Unlike them, he was promoting something which, post-Hitler, had become, as Mr. Buckley puts it, "unspeakable." Mr. Shockely was suggesting a "voluntary sterilization bonus plan": ;the amount of the bonus would be dependent on various factors. For example, income-tax payers would be offered no bonus. For all others, regardless of sex, race, or welfare status, ... the bonus would depend upon best scientific estimates - and that's a very important qualifying phrase... - of any genetically carried disabilities, such as arthritis, hemophilia, Huntington's chorea. And if there is a genetic predisposal to heroin addiction, this should get a big bonues. Then I go on to say, furthermore, add $1,000 for every point you score below 100 on an IQ test." An often heated but illuminating discussion with a man who was seldom allowed to be heard. --Summary by Firing Line staff
