Frank Lloyd Wright's Wisconsin estate, Taliesin, gave rise to a fascinating and provocative cultural experiment: the Taliesin Fellowship, an extraordinary architectural colony where Wright trained hundreds of devoted apprentices, while using them as the de facto architectural practice where all of his late masterpieces--Fallingwater, Johnson Wax, the Guggenheim Museum--were born. This book draws on hundreds interviews and countless documents from the Wright archives to create a portrait of Taliesin and the three mercurial figures at its center: Wright, his imperious wife Olgivanna Hinzenberg, and her spiritual master, the Greek-Armenian mystic Georgi Gurdjieff. The authors reveal how the idealistic community became a kind of fiefdom, where young apprentices were both inspired and manipulated by the architect and his wife. They trace the war of wills between Wright and Olgivanna, in which organic architecture was pitted against esoteric spiritualism in a struggle for the soul of Taliesin. They chronicle Wright's perennial battles with clients, bankers, and the government, which suspected him of both communist and fascist sympathies. And they tell the stories of Wright's devoted apprentices--many of them gay men--who found an uncertain refuge in the architect's Wisconsin and Arizona compounds, and who helped the master realize his dreamlike architectural visions, often at great personal cost.--From publisher description

There are over 30,000 identified photographic items in the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation Archives, and over a thousand unidentified images. The collection includes many duplicates. The photograph collection includes prints, negatives, contact sheets, transparencies, slides, and photocopies, and has been arranged in three series: Project Photographs, Personal and Family Photographs, and Taliesin Fellowship Photographs. Series 1: Project Photographs has been arranged chronologically by decade and project number, and includes images of buildings, their interiors, exteriors and their surroundings, as well as during construction. There are also photographs of models, exhibitions, and clients. Series 2: Personal and Family Photographs consists of professional portraits of Frank Lloyd Wright taken throughout his life, photographs and portraits of Olgivanna Lloyd Wright, informal snapshots taken by Wright or other family members, and photographs of Wright's ancestors. The photographic items in Series 3: Taliesin Fellowship Photographs document life at the fellowship and include many photographs of Wright with the apprentices. Arrangement of the photographs has largely remained consistent with how they were catalogued by the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. The Foundation's database is also the source for most information about the photographs, such as identification of projects, people, places, dates, and events. Photographers represented in this collection are only sometimes identified. These photographers may include Wright and his associates, or commercial or contract photographers (who may retain copyright)

"Talk to the Taliesin Fellowship" was a regular lecture series at Taliesin where Wright addressed the fellows and apprentices on a range of philosophical and personal topics. The collection includes transcripts of 236 of those talks dating from 1948 until a few weeks prior to Wright’s death in 1959. The format of the transcripts are unbound typescripts. About 50 of those transcripts include manuscript annotations likely in Wright's hand. The collection also includes an additional 58 transcripts of various talks, interviews and lectures given by Wright to a public audience. Audio recordings exist for nearly all of the talks represented in this collection. Those audio recordings are currently closed for research pending preservation work
