Hearts grown brutal : sagas of Sarajevo by Roger Cohen( Book )

11 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 1,211 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Roger Cohen of The New York Times takes us to the core of one of the twentieth century's most complex stories, weaving together the history of Yugoslavia and the story of the Bosnian War of 1992 to 1995, as experienced by four families." ""This was a war of intimate betrayals," Cohen goes on to say, and in Hearts Grown Brutal, the betrayals begin in the family of a man named Sead. Through his search for his lost father, we relive the history of Yugoslavia, founded at the end of World War I with the encouragement of President Woodrow Wilson. Sead's desperate quest is punctuated by the lies, half truths, and pain that mark other sagas of Yugoslavia. Through three more families - one Muslim-Serb, one Muslim, and one Serb-Croat - we experience the war in Bosnia as it breaks up marriages and sets relative against relative. The reality of the Balkans is illuminated, even as the hypocrisy of the international response to the war is exposed."--Jacket
Soldiers and slaves : [American POWs trapped by the Nazis' final gamble] by Roger Cohen( Recording )

9 editions published between 2005 and 2008 in English and held by 199 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In late 1944, the Germans, in an effort to offset the effects of Allied destruction of their fuel facilities, began construction of several underground facilities to produce and store synthetic fuel. These facilities were to be built largely by slave laborers, many of them diverted from neighboring concentration camps. In February 1945, these workers were joined by several hundred American POWs captured during the Battle of the Bulge. They had been singled out because they were Jewish or looked Jewish, or perhaps even because of random caprice. At a facility in eastern Germany, these Americans would experience the Holocaust as full-fledged victims rather than as liberators of the death camps, with sadistic guards, starvation rations, and consistent dehumanization of inmates. The death rate for POWs at that place was extremely high; it was exacerbated when they had to endure a forced march as the Nazi regime collapsed

Soldiers of another war by Roger Cohen( Book )

3 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 29 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In February 1945, 350 American POWs captured earlier at the Battle of the Bulge or elsewhere in Europe were singled out by the Nazis because they were Jews or were thought to resemble Jews. They were transported in cattle cars to Berga, a concentration camp in eastern Germany, and put to work as slave laborers. This was the only incident of its kind during World War II. Starved and brutalized, the GIs were denied their rights as prisoners of war, their ordeal culminating in a death march that was halted by liberation near the Czech border. More than seventy of them perished. This is the story of hell in a small place over a period of ten weeks, at a time when Hitler's Reich was crumbling but its killing machine still churned. It is a tale of madness and heroism, and of the failure to deliver justice for what the Nazis did to these Americans
