The Governor's Press Office is responsible for publicizing events of the governor's administration. In fulfilling this function, it maintains records of press conferences and public appearances. These are used in preparation of statements, analysis of media coverage of state issues and the administration, verification in case of misquotation or plagiarism, and analysis for consistency of policy. Series currently contains reels (chiefly seven-inch) of 1/4 inch magnetic audiotape, documenting 1963-1964 press conferences conducted by Gov. Endicott Peabody (1963-1965). Press conferences were held weekly, or on special or important occasions to inform the press and public and to answer press questions about state government policy and issues critical to Massachusetts state government
