Aminah Robinson has professed that she knew she wanted to be an artist from a young age growing up in Columbus' Poindexter Village. She attended weekend courses at CCAD (then the Columbus Art School) while still in high school and continued studying there after graduation. Her work utilizes both traditional skills she learned at CCAD and methods taught to her by her parents. The needlework, weaving and button work that infuse Robinson's art were taught to her by her mother. Her father taught her to make "homawg," a mixture of mud, clay and other materials that Robinson is known for using in various pieces. Local galleries and art collectors are not alone in their captivation of Robinson's distinctive and memorable art. In 2004 Robinson was awarded the highly prestigious MacArthur "Genius" Fellowship. This honor can be added to a list of local and national awards and acclaim. Her pieces are found in museums in Columbus, Akron, Oakland Baltimore and Harlem. Robinson calls the complex, form varying pieces she works on for long periods of time RagGonNons. They often include found objects and Robinson describes them as taking on a life of their own. Her work also includes sculpture, rag paintings, drawings, books and more. Robinson's inspiration is grounded in the idea of Sankofa -- learning from the past in order to move forward. Her art provides a window to stories past on by elders as well as her family and community
