This book provides a comprehensive treatment of the two fundamental aspects of a solid that determine its physical properties: lattice structure and atomic vibrations (phonons). The elements of group theory are extensively developed and used as a tool to show how the symmetry of a solid and the vibrations of the atoms in the solid lead to the physical properties of the material. The uses of different types of spectroscopy techniques that elucidate the lattice structure of a solid and the normal vibrational modes of the atoms in the solid are described. The interaction of light with solids (optical spectroscopy) is described in detail including how lattice symmetry and phonons affect the spectral properties and how spectral properties provide information about the material's symmetry and normal modes of lattice vibrations. The effects of point defects (doping) on the lattice symmetry and atomic vibrations and thus the spectral properties are discussed and used to show how material symmetry and lattice vibrations are critical in determining the properties of solid state lasers

This book demonstrates the importance of symmetry in determining the properties of solids and the power of using group theory and tensor algebra to elucidate these properties. It provides the fundamentals necessary for the reader to understand how to utilize these techniques in many different applications without becoming lost in a heavy formal treatment of the subject matter. The book begins by discussing the concepts of symmetry relevant to crystal structures. This is followed by a summary of the basics of group theory and how it applies to quantum mechanics. Next is a discussion of the description of the macroscopic properties of crystals by tensors and how symmetry determines the form of these tensors. The basic concepts covered in these early chapters are then applied to a series of different examples including crystal field theory treatment of point defects in solids, molecular orbitals, two-photon processes, the optical properties of solids, the nonlinear optical properties of solids, lattice vibrations, the Jahn-Teller effect, and the effects of translational symmetry on electronic energy bands in solids. Absorption, excitation, continuous fluorescence, and pulse fluorescence measurements were made on ruby samples with 0.94% and 2.1% Cr+3 in the temperature range from 4.2K up to 700K. The widths, positions, intensities, and lifetimes of the R and N fluorescence lines were determined at numerous temperatures. The results for the temperature dependence of the linewidths are explained in terms of microscopic strains, Raman scattering of phonons by the impurity ions, and direct phonon processes. The results for the lineshifts with temperature are due to the absorption and emission of virtual phonons. The observed lifetimes of the R and N lines coincide in the temperature range where the systems are thermalized and the observed decays are pure exponentials. At temperatures where the systems are decoupled, an initial rise in fluorescence is observed at the N lines. The subsequent decay has the lifetime of the R lines for a 0.94% sample and the lifetime of the N lines for a 2.1% sample. These results are also explained in terms of energy transfer from single ions to pairs. The effects of reabsorption on the fluorescence spectrum are also discussed. (Author)

Investigation of crystal imperfections by means of laser light scattering by Richard C Powell( Book )

The use of light scattering as a method for studying imperfections in crystals is discussed. A unique apparatus using a laser as a light source for ultramicroscopy and angular scattering experiments is described. The results obtained utilizing this apparatus for investigations of imperfections in ruby crystals are presented and discussed. These investigations were done as a function of crystal growth direction, annealing, boule morphology, polarization, chromium concentration, gamma-irradiation, and temperature. The results of this work demonstrate the usefulness of this new equipment as a convenient, nondestructive technique for characterizing imperfections in crystals of relatively large size. They also indicate the existence of both randomly distributed scatterers and oriented scattering regions in ruby crystals and show how these scattering centers are altered by changes in the various parameters studied in this investigation. Spectroscopic considerations of chromium doped lithium germanate as a possible laser material by Richard C Powell( Book )

Continuous fluorescence, pulsed fluorescence, and excitation measurements were made on lithium germanate samples containing 0. 038, 0. 12, and 0. 18 percent chromium. The several sharp lines appearing in the fluorescence spectrum are attributed to chromium ions in nonequivalent lattice sites. It appears that these sites are filled randomly as chromium concentration is increased. The temperature dependence of the widths, positions, intensites, and lifetimes were investigated for the two most prominent sets of R lines associated with chromium in nonequivalent sites. These results are interpreted in terms of energy transfer between chromium ions in nonequivalent sites, which is efficient enough at high temperatures to allow thermal equilibrium to be established between the two florescent systems but which predicts pumping of the R system by the R' system at low temperatures. The physical characteristics of host sensitized energy transfer in single crystals of CaWO4:Sm(3+) and YVO4:Eu(3+) are elucidated and interpreted in this project. This was accomplished through an extensive investigation of the optical properties of these systems over a wide range of temperatures and activator concentrations. The absorption, fluorescence, and excitation spectra were measured as well as the integrated fluorescence intensities and decay times. From experimental results which were obtained, it was possible to develop models which explain both qualitatively and quantitatively the observed spectral characteristics of these systems and how they change with temperature and activator concentration. Activator induced host traps are found to be important for both systems and intrinsic host traps are also important in the model for calcium tungstate luminescence
