Tom Turner(
)
12 editions published between 2009 and 2014 in English and held by 1,454 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Environmental community, and the legal battles that continue to rage more than seven years later. It explores the value of roadless areas and why the Clinton rule was so important to environmentalists, describes the stakeholder groups involved, and takes readers into courtrooms across the country to hear critical arguments." "Author Tom Turner considers the lessons learned from the controversy, arguing that the episode represents an excellent example of how the system can work when all elements of the environmental movement work together - local groups and individuals determined to save favorite places, national organizations that represent local interests but also concern themselves with national policies, members of the executive branch who try to serve the public interest but need support from outside, and national organizations that use the legal system to support progress achieved through legislation or executive action." --Book Jacket

David Brower : the making of the environmental movement by
Tom Turner(
)
8 editions published in 2015 in English and held by 1,296 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"David Brower is one of the dominant figures in the environmental movement over the last half of the twentieth century. Frequently compared to John Muir, Brower was the first executive director of the Sierra Club, founded Friends of the Earth, and helped secure passage of the Wilderness Act. Tapping his passion for wilderness and especially the mountains he scaled in his youth, he was a key figure in the creation of the Point Reyes National Seashore, the Northern Cascades and Redwood National Parks, and was a central figure in successful efforts to keep dams from being built in Dinosaur National Monument and the Grand Canyon. Until now there has been no comprehensive biography of this dynamic leader. This book looks back at his life and the impact he had on the environmental movement from its beginning until his death in 2000. Tom Turner started working with David Brower in 1968 and remained close until Brower's death, giving us an insider's look at the man and his decisive role inside the birth of the environmental movement. Turner has examined Brower's diaries, notebooks, articles, books, and published interviews, and has conducted interviews with more than fifty of Brower's admirers, enemies, and colleagues to develop a complete picture of this controversial and iconic figure"--Provided by publisher

Wild by law : the Sierra Club Legal Defense Fund and the places it has saved by
Carr Clifton(
Book
)
1 edition published in 1990 in English and held by 430 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Turner tells the little-known history of the Sierra Club Legal Defense Fund, and the effort to get the courts to help protect America's wilderness. He traces the intricacies of the legal battles to save the valley of Mineral King (California), Admiralty Island (Alaska), the Colorado Plateau, and the Redwood National Park from the destructive intrusion of logging, coal mining, the overdevelopment of recreational areas, and the establishment of nuclear waste dumps. Turner notes that litigation will remain an essential aspect of environmentalism. Clifton's photographs corroborate the zeal and perseverance of those involved in the protection of wilderness. ISBN 0-87156-627-3: $50.00 (For use only in the library)

Justice on earth : Earthjustice and the people it has served by
Tom Turner(
Book
)
3 editions published in 2002 in English and held by 294 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Earthjustice has represented thousands of clients in court, from Native American tribes to hunters and fishermen, from the Maine Lobsterman's Association to the Gray Wolf Committee of Idaho, from People Against Chlordane (New York) to the Hana Community Association of Hawaiì, from Friends of the Sea Otter (California) to Friends of the Horsepasture (North Carolina). This book details a handful of important cases Earthjustice has pursued in the last decade - a time in which its focus has shifted slightly from preserving pristine landscapes to restoring damaged ones, and to working on behalf of communities threatened by environmental harm." "One chapter recounts a monumental crusade to stop a mining giant from reopening an old, bleeding gold mine on the border of Yellowstone National Park. Another describes efforts to heal a California river ravaged by logging and road building. In Washington, D.C., Earthjustice lawyers banded with groups in the poorer southeast neighborhoods to block massive unnecessary development along the Anacostia River. In rural northern Louisiana, it helped two tiny African-American communities stop a uranium processing plant from being built nearly on top of them. And from Hawaiì comes news of a campaign to restore water stolen from Windward Oàhu and piped eastward to grow sugar, wreaking havoc on native Hawaiian communities nearly a century ago." "The stories are illustrated by photographs from leading nature and wildlife photographers such as Robert Glenn Ketchum, Galen Rowell, and Carr Clifton, as well as documentary images of the places, people, and activities portrayed. Graceful and accurate watercolor maps orient the reader in each chapter."--Jacket
