Avaldsnes : a sea-kings' manor in first-millennium Western Scandinavia by Dagfinn Skre( )

18 editions published between 2016 and 2018 in English and held by 1,049 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The research efforts presented in this volume enable the delineation of the Avaldsnes' history into three phases. During the first phase, sea kings used Avaldsnes as a base for dominating the islands and waters along the coastal sailing route. Around AD 900, one of the sea kings rose to become a land king, the first King of Norway, ushering in the second phase. The third phase began around AD 1400, when the manor became the rectory for the vicar St. Olafr Church, as it has since remained."--Page vii

Kaupang is connected to the power centre of Skiringssal, to the Ynglings - the legendary Norwegian royal lineage, and to the King of the Danes - the dominant political actor in south-west Scandinavia.Kaupang is shown to have had several of the sa

Kaupang in Skiringssal by Dagfinn Skre( )

9 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 23 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In Norway, not far from Oslo, archaeologists have uncovered Norway's largest Viking trading town. With its houses, workshops and burial sites Kaupang covered an area of about 50 decares (12.5 acres). The site lies in a small inlet, protected from the sea by two small islands. The sheltered location would have allowed sailing ships to travel in and out whatever the wind direction, perfect for the seafaring Vikings. Among the finds are walrus-tusk ivory from the north for the royal courts of the Continent, and soapstone containers from the Roman Empire on their way to wealthy households in Swede
