Islam and science : religious orthodoxy and the battle for rationality by Pervez Hoodbhoy( Book )

10 editions published between 1991 and 1992 in English and held by 355 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this book, Dr. Hoodbhoy, a nuclear physicist, eloquently and usefully draws attention to the plight of science and technology in the Muslim world and to the need to do something about it. The book also makes some other helpful insights here and there about why, after centuries of brilliant achievements, science suffered such a fate in the Muslim world. But the book also suffers from some very serious flaws in its view of Islam and analysis of Islamic history
Confronting the bomb : Pakistani and Indian scientists speak out( Book )

5 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 137 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Authored by scientists from both sides of the Pakistan-India divide, 'Confronting the Bomb' fearlessly explores tabooed, but urgent, nuclear issues. Concerned citizens, policy makers, and nuclear experts are presented with a rich range of complexities, political and semi-technical. Beginning with the coming of the atomic age to India, and later to Pakistan, the book looks at the furious nuclear racing after the 1998 nuclear tests. What are the principal drivers and where lies the future? It goes on to examine Pakistan's changing strategic nuclear objectives, the Kargil conflict, and the fact that ownership of the bomb is now claimed by Islamic political parties. The worrying issue of the safety and security of Pakistan's nuclear arsenal is considered in the background of an ideological divide within the military. The somewhat more technical articles deal with early warning issues, the battlefield use of nuclear weapons, problems related to the fissile materials treaty, and the likely effects of a limited nuclear exchange between Pakistan and India. Two essays deal with nuclear electricity generation, making the point that this may not be the promised panacea for the subcontinent's energy problem. Rejecting nuclear nationalism, this is a unique work by Pakistanis and Indians working together to warn of nuclear dangers."--pub. desc
Education and the state : fifty years of Pakistan( Book )

5 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 127 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book is an attempt to come to grips with the complex problem of education in Pakistan. What makes it unique is the analytical approach of the contributors who provide qualitative impressions as well as quantitative data where available." "This book will challenge the reader to think afresh about the diseased system of education in Pakistan. A common theme of all the essays in this volume is that simply spending more on education is not enough; the holes in this leaky bucket must be plugged first." "The essays have been written by individuals who have had a long personal and professional association with educational issues in Pakistan."--Jacket

M.A.B. Bég memorial volume : based on the proceedings of the School on High Energy Physics et Cosmology, Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad, Pakistan (March 11-25, 1990), and invited papers( )

1 edition published in 1991 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The M.A.B. BÉG MEMORIAL VOLUME is based on scientific articles written in honor of the late Mirza Abdul Baqi Bég, a professor of physics at the Rockefeller University, New York. The contributed articles are partly based on talks given at the school on high energy physics and cosmology, held March 11 – 25, 1990 at the Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad, Pakistan, and partly on articles contributed by his colleagues and collaborators. Being a scientific tribute to Bég, the articles reflect the specific areas of his scientific research and the contemporary trends and open questions in elementary particle physics. Deciphering the mechanism of symmetry breaking with the help of known properties of elementary particles – their masses and couplings — and devising new experimental tests to find clues to the actual physical phenomena at work, are the recurring themes in this book. The role of higher symmetries, formulated in terms of the string and grand unified theories, likewise is elucidated in several articles. The book also contains one of the last articles authored by Bég, written in honor of Luigi Radicati, describing a scientific history of the crucial development from the quark model to the standard model which took place in the sixties."--Publisher's website

2 editions published in 2002 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Since September 11, Pakistan is at the center of American foreign policy. Overnight, the U.S. needed Pakistan's support for the war on Afghanistan. The payoff for the impoverished South Asian country was substantial. Sanctions were lifted, debts were forgiven and aid and loans were offered. Pakistan was created in 1947 when the British partitioned India. That partition resulted in hundreds of thousands of deaths, millions of refugees and an on-going conflict over Kashmir. Pakistan's raison d'étre is Islam. Its 140 million people make it, after Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim country
