Achilles Tatius by
Achilles Tatius(
Book
)
76 editions published between 1917 and 1984 in 4 languages and held by 1,250 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Achilles Tatius was a Greek from Alexandria in Egypt; he is now believed to have flourished in the second century CE. Of his life nothing is known, though the Suidas says he became a Christian and a bishop and wrote a work on etymology, one on the sphere, and an account of great men. He is famous however for his surviving novel in eight books, The Adventures of Leucippe and Clitophon, one of the best Greek love stories. Clitophon relates to a friend the various difficulties which he and Leucippe had to overcome before they are happily united. The story is full of incident and readers are kept in suspense. There are many digressions giving scientific facts, myths, meditations, and so on, the interest of which redeems irrelevance."--Harvard University Press

Daphnis & Chloe by
Longos(
Book
)
45 editions published between 1916 and 2005 in 5 languages and held by 680 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
LONGUS (whose very name is uncertain) is known to us only by his novel Daphnis and Chloe. He seems to have been a pagan sophist who lived about A.D. 200, possibly a Greek freedman in a Roman household. This romance recounts the adventures of two foundlings, brought up together by shepherds, from their infancy to their marriage. Unlike most examples of the genre, Daphnis and Chloe is concerned less with improbable incident than with the development of the main characters and their initiation into the secrets of human love. PARTHENIUS of Nicea in Bithynia, a Greek poet, was brought to Rome in 73 B.C. as a prisoner of war. After his release he settled in Italy and worked as a poet and teacher. Virgil was one of his pupils. Parthenius's poetry, mainly elegiac, is lost, and his only extant work is Erotica Pathemata, an anthology of prose summaries of love-stories from Greek literature, collected apparently for the use of Roman poets

Achilles Tatius(
)
24 editions published between 1917 and 2015 in 3 languages and held by 323 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Leucippe and Clitophon, written in the second century CE, is exceptional among the ancient romances in being a first-person narrative: the adventures of the young couple are recounted by the hero himself. Achilles Tatius' style is notable for descriptive detail and for his engaging digressions
