Impressions of light : the French landscape from Corot to Monet by George T. M Shackelford( Book )

11 editions published in 2002 in English and held by 618 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Impressions of Light introduces a new level of complexity into the discussion of French landscapes. Rather than considering the landscape as a steady, linear development, it takes into account the many crosscurrents and intersecting paths in French art, from the foundations of the Barbizon School through the Post-Impressionist period. In addition, it studies the landscape in a variety of media - painting, printmaking, drawing, and photography - exploring both the individual artists' perceptions and the ways in which they influenced one another." "With over eighty paintings and seventy works on paper from the Museum of Fine Arts' collections, and published to accompany a major exhibition, Impressions of Light encompasses more than one hundred years and fifty-five artists. The book includes an authoritative opening essay, detailed discussions of the works by specialists in the field, and thorough documentation for each object. It takes a broad view, yet never loses sight of the intricacy and variation that make the landscape so endlessly appealing."--Jacket

A new world imagined : art of the Americas by Boston Museum of Fine Arts( Book )

2 editions published in 2010 in English and held by 409 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This work proposes a bold new look at the art of the Americas by viewing it through its intersections and relationships with the world at large. Taking the vast geography and staggering cultural diversity of the North and South American continents as its starting point, the book introduces the ways in which American art, broadly defined, has been shaped both by its encounters with cultures around the globe and by its own past, from the ancient and native populations that first inhabited these territories to the European, Asian, Scandinavian and Latino emigres who settled here. But beyond actual immigration, foreign cultures, especially the strikingly different cultures of Asia and the Islamic world, have also impacted our own in purely imaginary ways, as American artists projected their fantasies and preconceptions on these far off lands and "imported" their motifs, infusing their work with a rich, wholly invented and thoroughly American vision of the "other." Discussing over 200 artworks, from incense burners and painted drinking vessels to some of this country's most celebrated paintings and sculptures, and coinciding with the opening of MFA Boston's new Art of the Americas wing, this work offers an alternate history of the Americas through the diverse inspirations and interactions through which its art has been fashioned. -- From book jacket
Paris and the countryside : modern life in late-19th-century France by Gabriel P Weisberg( Book )

9 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 294 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"It has long been observed that the French Impressionists and their followers heeded Charles Baudelaire's call to paint "modern life." The exhibition catalogue explores what the very notion of a modern life, in its many facets, meant in late-nineteenth-century France, both in Paris and outside it. Gabriel P. Weisberg's essay touches on a range of issues that together capture, from a distinctly human viewpoint, something of the richness and complexity of life in Paris at the time. Using the objects secured for the exhibition, he discusses aspects of urban modernity that diversely affected rich and poor; created opportunities for women as artists, tastemakers, and consumers; spawned and/or sustained an array of performing arts, both highbrow and popular; and embraced the influx of non-French culture." "In her essay, Jennifer L. Shaw offers a thorough overview of the rise of modernism in French landscape painting as it paralleled the desire of artists to demonstrate, through their techniques and choice of subjects, that they belonged to a new era of picture making. Her interpretations of the wide range of landscape paintings in the exhibition bring to life the surprisingly many faces of the French countryside, only fairly recently connected to Paris by train, including travel and leisure, industry and pollution, and artists' colonies and retreats. The scope of this catalogue should inspire viewers and readers to understand something of the vitality of the era as it was experienced by artists and viewers at the time, and in so doing perhaps draw fresh attention to a body of work that has become seemingly all too familiar."--BOOK JACKET

James Surls : in the Meadows and beyond by James Surls( Book )

3 editions published in 2004 in English and held by 206 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This volume is the first full-length examination of the life and art of James Surls. In a seminal essay, art historian Mark Thistlethwaite discusses Surls's personal history, beginning in East Texas and continuing today in the Colorado meadows. He describes the creation of Surls's visual language of eyes, knives, diamonds, and flowers and the influences that have shaped him as an artist. In addition, the volume contains an interview with the artist, a tribute by his wife, Charmaine Locke, an artist herself, and commentary by Mark A. Roglan, curator of the exhibition In the Meadows: Recent Sculpture, Drawings, and Prints of James Surls (January 24-April 20, 2003). Sixty-two black-and-white and ninety-eight color illustrations, including images of early works, are featured in this catalogue, which showcases more than sixty pieces forming the core of the Meadows Museum exhibition."--BOOK JACKET
