Living with history, 1914-1964 : rebuilding Europe after the First and Second World Wars and the role of heritage preservation/La reconstruction en Europe après la Première et la Seconde Guerre Mondiale et le rôle de la conservation des monuments historiques( )

14 editions published between 2011 and 2021 in English and held by 830 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Living with History focuses on a particular aspect of heritage preservation in the 20th century: destruction and post-war reconstruction in Belgium, France, Germany, Great Britain, and The Netherlands. This book establishes a status quaestionis for the historiography of wartime and post-war preservation, and sets these particular developments in preservation history in the context of the general evolution of architecture and urbanism. It studies the specific role of conservationists and heritage institutions and administrations in the overall reconstruction, and examines the specific role of architects and planners in preservation matters.
Revival after the Great War : rebuild, remember, repair, reform by Leen Engelen( )

7 editions published between 2020 and 2021 in English and held by 661 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In the months and years immediately following the First World War, the many (European) countries that had formed its battleground were confronted with daunting challenges. These challenges varied according to the country's earlier role and degree of involvement in the war but were without exception enormous. The contributors to this book analyse how this was not only a matter of rebuilding ravaged cities and destroyed infrastructure but also of rebuilding people's damaged bodies and upended daily lives, and rethinking and reforming societal, economic and political structures. These processes took place against the backdrop of mass mourning and remembrance, political violence and economic crisis. At the same time, the postwar 'tabula rasa' offered many innovative opportunities in various areas of society, from social and political reform to architectural design. The wide scope of postwar recovery is reflected in the different sections of this book: rebuild, remember, repair, and reform. It offers insights into the postwar era in Western European countries such as Belgium, France, Germany, Portugal, Spain, and Italy, as well as into how those efforts were perceived outside of Europe, for instance in Argentina and the United States."--Page 4 of cover

Harmony or not? This is a complex question with a multitude of answers. This publication is for architects when making design choices and also for managers when making spatial decisions. Urban planning legislation is often very formal and stringent. What is lacking in the debate is the spatial quality, the harmony of the building with its immediate surroundings
